Wedding date falls on a holiday...

DesertBride, on August 17, 2010 at 1:32 PM Posted in Planning 0 30

We finally chose our wedding date. We wanted a spring wedding and decided it should correspond with Spring Break (most of the wedding party, including FS and I, are graduate or law students). We chose the second weekend of the break, so the wedding party could travel to us and help with the final details. But that Saturday is St. Patrick's Day. I'm not sure I want our anniversary associated with the holiday. Am I over thinking the date? Does it not really matter? Anyone else have a holiday wedding date?

A St.Pats wedding would be so much fun... but then again could be Cheezy. I think its what you make of it. I go to school where St.Pats is a big deal (Rolla) so I dont think I would want to do it because everyone would think it was intentional but as long as you dont get too theme-y with it I dont think that it would matter much. If your really worried what about a friday or sunday wedding?

When I think St. Patricks Day- I think drunken bashes. I don't know if oyu want that associated with your wedding day.

I'd think long and hard about using a holiday weekend. It will require your guests to alter their Spring Break plans. Anyone with children will want to take that time to go out of town.

Also, if you do St. Patricks day- people are going to expect green for your color, green beer, etc...

I'm getting married on Mother's Day Smiley smile At first I was really worried about it (mostly about guests not coming or being offended) but we decided not to change it and are going to do something special for our mothers and grandmothers either during the ceremony or reception. We won't let the day go unnoticed. We even mentioned it on our wedding website.

I think that it would be an okay holiday to have your wedding Smiley smile If you are super uncomfortable though, change it.

Yeah I'd say having a wedding around a holiday is annoying, nevermind having it ON the holiday, but St Patty's is not a huge celebration holiday for most ppl, unless of course you're irish. I wouldn't worry too much about it. But, if its REALLY annoying you, change it to the 18th! Nothing wrong with Sundays Smiley smile

Thanks. I'm pretty committed to a Saturday wedding. Most of the guests are OOT. I chose spring break because it's actually easier for some guests. FS' sister, etc may not be able to attend otherwise, as she'll be in her final year of law school. Most (over 90%) of my other guests do not have school age children, so I'm not worried about altering their travel plans. I just don't want to incorporate the holiday into the wedding (though green is an accent color). I'm from AZ and most of our guests are from Southern California. The holiday doesn't seem to be a huge deal in the southwest, but I could be wrong.

Well, Ms Darlin, IDK where you live, but everyone I know parties hard on St. Pats! Smiley xd Given that most of your friends are college students, I think people might have some preconcieved notions of what your wedding would be like. Might make for a great afterparty? I would say you run the risk of people declining due to long standing plans, or if you have it Sunday, people not showing up due to hangovers. (Worst case, of course). If you are set on it, make sure you get STD's out super early, so people can plan. Flights might also be more expensive though...

To clarify, we (wedding party, me, FS) are 27-30. Even older in 2012. Not exactly young college students (PhD, law, etc). FS's family is either Italian (from Boston area) or Korean. My family is also not Irish. But everyone has a point. I don't want people to expect a St. Patrick's theme.

I love the date, mostly because it's my birthday! It's not really a "family" holiday, so I think it'll be fine. Only caution would be the bill for drinks at the end of the night if you do an open bar. I'd definitely cap it if it's per drink instead of per person Smiley smile

I'm 31, and I still party HARD on St. Patty's day. I see the value of using a holiday time frame to accomodate OOT guests, but maybe you should consider doing it the first Saturday, not the second. People may not want to travel the day before they have to return to work from their vacation. Having it the first weekend still allows guests to make their own plans for the rest of the week.

I'm getting married the night before thanksgiving (a/k/a the biggest party night of the year!) one of the reasons why we picked it! :-)

We can provide our own alcohol to be served, but they are a drinking group Smiley smile Perhaps I should move it to the first weekend of the break. We wanted the wedding party to be able to help out, and I know his sister wanted to be there early. We were going to have the bach. parties the first weekend. Erg. I have time. I'll figure it out. I just wish it wasn't a holiday...the timing was perfect otherwise.

I went to a St. Patty's wedding last time it fell on a Saturday, I think it was 2007. The girls wore green dresses. A lot of us did wear beads, but besides that it was your regular wedding. We did drink a lot, so I think that if you have a crowd that will be drinking, then they will enjoy it.

Didn't hit refresh...yeah, we still party, but that date has never meant much to my immediate group of friends. Just not sure about others. It's really only my wedding party that will even have spring break off. And they want to come early. No one else is in school, aside from a handful of people with small children. Thanks for all your help!

I think you're fine. I looove St. Patrick's day, but I wouldn't expect a March 17th wedding to be St. Patty's related. Given the age and educational level of your guests, they should know that it's just a coincidence. St. patty's is just an excuse to drink, so I don't think it'll matter. If your friends are drinkers, they;ll probably drink a lot regardless of the date. And if they're not, they won't even care.

I officiate at a lot of holiday weddings because that's when people have enough time off to travel. I've done New Year's Eve, New Year's Day, Valentine's Day, St. Pat's, Easter, Memorial Day weekend, 4th of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving weekend, and even Christmas morning.

Thanks Mrs and Nancy. That makes me feel better. My MOH doesn't think it will be a big deal. I'm still not convinced, but like I said I still have some time to figure it out. The date is just so perfect otherwise.

It all depends. I celebrate St. Pat's for it's true meaning, not the Americanized meaning (bc I am half Irish and my dad's side of the family are all proud Irishmen). If you're of Irish heritage, it might be kind of fun, provided you don't use the American commercialized theme for the wedding.
