That Magic Moment When The Call Comes /Questions

RhnCasi419, on March 6, 2015 at 7:50 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 15

"Your dress is in!" I won't lie, I was consuming a massive amount of take out food with my FH when the call came in. LOL. Yikes. I dropped that fork so fast when I hung up with the bridal shop. I'm full.

So wow. They said I have 30 days to come pick it up. And that if I am using their alterations team, to bring the dress back in August for the start of alterations. So, this dress will be in my house for 4 months. I have a million questions. Is this common? At first, the sales person/bridal consultant told me it could stay at the shop and I would come back in August to start alterations, but the person who called me last night to tell me it is in said, no, they won't have room for it there. I'm worried about discoloring while it sits in its box? I'm worried I will put that dress on every solitary moment I am alone! I don't want to be doing that! Finally, my closet space is already full. Guess I better make room? And I don't want FH to see it and we live together.

I had to take mine home when it came in. I bought it way early too, so it was in my closet for like 6 months before I took it to alterations. Mine was just fine as far as discoloring, just keep it out of the sunlight. Do you have anyone that could hold your dress for you? I gave it to my mom to keep, but if she wasn't around I would have given it to my MOH. It keeps you from trying it on all the time and FH accidentally (or purposely) looking at it.

I have had my dress since mid-November. I couldn't pass up the deal and it was perfect, so it has been at my Mom's since mid-November. It is hidden in a closet in a spare bedroom. IF you have someone who can store it for you, do it, so you are not tempted to try it on at every chance

Some bridal shops just don't have the room to store dresses. You're lucky you have 30 days. I had 7 days to pick mine up, and it's a 2 hour drive to the bridal shop. Foretunately it came in mid-week and I could go in the following weekend and pick it up. I'm going to have mine hanging in a closet for 2 years, Not worred about discoloration.

I'm surprised by how many bridal shops have women take the dresses home. My dress came in, I made an appointment to try it on, and then I need to call this month to make my first alterations appointment in May. The dress will stay at the shop, even when alterations are done, until the day before my wedding when I go pick it up.

Just don't expose your dress to sun and discoloration shouldn't be an issue, I have mine stored at my gma's because my mom's house has my sister's kids running around which makes me nervous. I would definitely look into a family member or friend to hold onto the dress for you

My dress has been at my mom's since we picked it up in December. I think it's pretty standard. And you should be okay leaving it in the bag!

I am keeping my dress at the shop - I am not planning on picking it up until 1-2 days before my wedding. I 100% do not trust myself to have something that expensive and that white in the apartment haha.

I had to take mine home when it came in too. Once they start alterations, they'll keep it at the store. I specifically asked how I should store it and they said it is just fine in the bag it was in.

As far as where to store it, you should hang it from a door or something. It's too long to hang in your closet.

I got mine a couple weeks ago and it will be sitting at my mom's house for about 10 months before alterations get started on it! It will be fine in a in the bag, you won't have any problems.

I ordered mine July 19th (I only know because it was the day after my birthday and our 4 year anniversary!) and it just arrived on February 23rd so I picked it up February 28th. They said they do not keep dresses at the store and I am okay with that. I would be terrified they would accidentally give my gown to someone else. These kinds of things happen to me.

My friend ordered her dress in August and it arrived in December and she is leaving it at the shop. Her wedding date is two weeks after mine.

So I've seen it both ways! I just assumed I would take it home, anyways. I would feel strange paying so much for a dress and not having it before the wedding. I heard discoloring happens after multiple years, not months. So we both should be fine!

I purchased my dress just a couple of months before summer. And my FH and I went to Mexico for a week for the summer. Everything was all inclusive, including drinks. So I had to indulge. When we got back, there were constant cook outs and summer parties, of course I attended all of those . In November I got the call that my dress came in, had to pick up in 30 days due to lack of space. I was freaking out because I knew I had put on at least 10 lbs. over the summer and thanksgiving. Needless to say I put it off as long as I could, finally I picked it up and it did not zip all the way (see pic). So, I've been dieting since the new year. On another note, you can have your MOH keep your dress, or your mother. Mine is at my MOH's.

My bridal salon is storing my dress for me (as it is insured as long as it is under their roof) but it is a larger salon. I can see some smaller salons or more chain ones having policies where you need to pick it up.

Thanks everyone for the info and advice about storing the dress over the next few months! I really wasn't sure. I think I am going to keep at FMIL's house. My mother smokes like a chimney IN HER HOUSE ... so no way.

@Lennox ... wow, if you don't mind me asking how much was your dress that you had it insured? We are insuring the engagement ring, but my dress is a simple A-line Casablanca and I paid $914 for it! No need to insure. I bought it at a privately owned salon/boutique ... very nice place, a good size building and space and selection of gowns.

The salon just has insurance on all dresses that are under their roof so it really wouldn't have matter what I spent! It wasn't anything I had to pay extra for. They carry a wide range of dresses from under 1000 to over 10,000.
