Sister in law as bridesmaid?

Nicole, on February 11, 2019 at 5:20 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 13
I am worried about asking a specific person to be a BM. I honestly could go without, but I'm worried about upsetting my future mother in law. I want to have FH's sister for sure, but his brother is also engaged (their wedding is first) and I feel like i might get some backlash if i dont include his fiance. Granted, I am not in theirs but they are also keeping things much smaller. Would it be rude for me to exclude her, even though she isnt FH's sister? (PS FH's mom isnt a controlling or cruel individual. She just thinks of all of us as her own and FH's brother in law will be in the wedding too, so she would be the only one not)

I am in similar situation with older sisters husband with attire (my dad and brother in wedding party and younger sisters husband found same thing we’re ordering and planned to get it so I was like cool we’ll all match and asked my older sisters husband if he wanted same as rest of men were... even though it was supposed to be wedding party attire so now I’m trying to figure out how to make actual groomsmen stand out lol)

I don't think it's rude to exclude the fiance. 1) they're not married yet 2) you don't seem to have any special kinship with her. Most of the complaints I see on here are of regrets that brides included BMs they weren't particularly keen on.

I can see the case for her feeling left out.... but also she's not technically part of the family and you're only thinking about adding her as an appeasement for your new MIL.

If you aren't in their wedding and aren't close to her, I don't think it's rude. You could also wait until closer to June or July to decide, and see if the relationship improves or grows at all. I asked my fiance's 2 sisters, his stepsister, and his stepsister in law (stepbrother's wife) but I'm close with all of them so it made more sense.

Your bridesmaids should be your absolute nearest and dearest friends and family. Don't ask people out of obligation.

If you aren't close to her and wouldn't normally have her as a bridesmaid I definitely wouldn't include her just because you feel you should. That role should go to your nearest and dearest!

Let it go for now; it's far too early to be asking potential bridesmaids. You may become closer down the road and actually want to include her.

Nope. Your bridesmaids shouldn't be chosen purely by status. If she isn't your closest friend that you couldn't imagine not being by your side, don't ask her.

This is what matters. She knows as well as you do that you two have not to this point been especially close. And it is NOT flattering to be the one in a group who was invited to make some third party happy. You enjoy being a guest at her wedding, as she will at yours.

Ok, so I actually had something happen to me a few weeks ago with my brother in law’s girlfriend of 7 years.
They straight up asked me if I was going to ask her to be a bridesmaid. My FH isn’t having groomsmen & I am only have “BM’s” for pictures. I am not having them walk down the aisle or anything like that. So I told her that. It got uncomfortable and she told me that she wouldn’t ask me for her wedding then. I don’t know if they were joking or not, but either way it was awkward. My FH totally supported my decision because he said he’s never had much of a relationship with her himself. I am also somewhat worried about what mother in law will think because she thinks the same way as yours does. But at the end of the day it’s your wedding and everyone needs to understand that it’s not theirs.

So I say do not feel obligated to ask her to be one. I assume your FH chose his GMs and you’re choosing yours. If you want to include her in some other way, by all means! Give her a role to make her feel like she contributed! But not a BM

I made my sis in law my “bride’s keeper” and most likely having her read something at the ceremony
