Saving up money for wedding costs

karen, on March 9, 2016 at 3:37 PM Posted in Planning 0 12

I would like your advice on how to save up for the wedding. I'm terrible at budgeting

so am in favour of a mutual wedding account where we both contribute on a monthly basis. Any other words of wisdom would be greatly appreciated.

I have been saving for years but I would recommend opening an account specifically for the wedding and putting any extra money u come across in there (tax refund , bday gifts , etc) as well making s direct deposit on a monthly basis to get u started

Well, you need a budget. There's really no escaping that. Figure out how much you can afford to set aside and there is your budget. A wedding account is a great idea; how much can you each contribute per month? Multiply that by how many months until your wedding and there ya go!

The best thing I found was to start writing down every purchase in a notebook.

It quickly made me realized where I could cut money from.

When you write down that going out to eat expense it feels so very real.

You're still budgeting even if you're putting money into a savings account each month.

    First, cut the guest list.

    Then cut;

    cable

    giant phone bills

any subscriptions you don't use or love; the gym, birchbox, magazines, apps

    stop eating out, getting Starbucks

    recreational shopping

the gym; you can do plenty of stuff at home and outside

Subscribe to blogs; 'the simple dollar' and 'money mustache man' are tops

Join Digit; it takes a little bit out of your checking account at random times; you won't even notice it

Join Smarty Pig; you can have a certain amount taken out and saved every month.....you won't even notice it.

Do some mystery shopping; go to Volition.com to find out more

We sat and calculated what we had saved and what we could both save after lay in bed off a bill or two by the date we wanted. We then found our necessities within the budget (venue, catering etc) and found the cheapest and best options with the remainder (photos only digital, cheap favors, small cake etc)

I'm more the saver so I manage the accounts. Im also a banker lol.

Stick to your guns. You don't need eat out every week or take lavish vacations if you really want to put your all into this. Just need some discipline Smiley smile

Never mind the wedding, for the sake of your marriage you should really learn how to budget and be responsible with your money.

We sat down and figured out how much we spend each month in bills and extras and looked at where we could save money and what money we could save goes into the wedding fund. It has been very rewarding watching the amount grow

We decided how much we were willing to spend total on a wedding, figured out how many months we have to save, and then did the math to figure out how much a month we'd each have to put away.

We put away AT LEAST that amount every single month before we do anything else (after paying bills, credit cards, insurance and car payments of course).

Tax returns, bonuses, etc. are extra money and always deposited directly into the account. Better to have more than enough saved.

We also cut out extra spending; going out less and I canceled my monthly massages :'(

Think about your budget for the wedding. Once you have that number, figure out how much you can afford to put into a savings account monthly. We opened a separate savings and contribute monthly. One month before our wedding we will have saved all necessary funds. Most of our wedding expenses are due the week before so it was perfect for us. Good luck!
