Save the dates: magnets or post cards? Picture or no pic?

Amanda, on January 28, 2018 at 11:03 PM Posted in Planning 0 13

We're deciding on save the dates and I think we want to do magnets. Or should we save money and just do post cards? Did magnets cost more to mail?

Also, picture or no pic? We haven't taken engagement pics yet and I have seen some cute ones without pics and just designs.

Thoughts please Smiley heart

Magnets can cost a little bit more to mail because you usually have to pay for the non-machinable stamps. I 'cheated' and mailed my magnets out with everyone's Christmas card this past year.

I didn't have to pay for the magnets though since Shutterfly kept giving away sets of ten, so my mom and I made four total different sets and just paid for the shipping. We hadn't done our engagement session by the time we made the magnets, so we just used candid shots of us and our dog over the years. Attached are our different designs.

It will depend how heavy they are- a stamp covers 1oz. If you can get a free sample (try asking it is surprising how many places will ship you a sample) and take it to the post office to weigh (I also recommend bringing a completed invitation after you order them to be weighed. It would be horrible to stamp and mail just to have everything returned.

I did postcards with no pictures and no envelope; they do the job. I kind of feel that whatever you send ends up being trash sooner or later, and probably sooner than you think, so at least it could be recyclable trash. I also don't display things with other people's pictures on them so that was never an option for me.

I honestly wouldn't bother with magnets. People can still put paper on their fridge, and frankly, unless it's close family, I'm not keeping it on my fridge, or will not after the wedding. I just recently threw away a save the date magnet from a friend whose wedding we could not attend.

I would do postcards with a picture. I don’t think I would keep a magnet

We’re doing postcards. It’s a DW so I thought it fit and I also decided to save a little money where we could. I don’t really care if it gets a little banged up in the mail.

I did magnets (without a picture) and didn’t have any issues with them in the mail. I just used the (at the time) $0.49 Forever stamp and had a thicker envelope (I also tested them on my fridge to see if they’ve would stick). I believe postcards take less postage though so if you’re looking to save that might be worth looking into.

It depends on what you want. These can usually be skipped no problem, if you're worried about money.
I personally did magnets. I didn't want to spend the money on something I designed and sent only for someone to just toss until the invitations came along. Plus, I know everyone is magnet junk collecter like me... Smiley laugh They costed a little more and I was NOT real impressed with MagnetStreet's print as it had faded/washed out most of the design, but everyone really liked them and loved how unique it was. You can still read them and such, so I couldn't really stay bitter about them. I'd recommend doing smaller magnets (I did 5x7 or something like that) so you get a bolder print if you choose to do them.

We didn't have photos on our save the dates. Our friend designed ours, so they were custom. And super cheap. They were actually designed to resemble a check (but are way cuter than a check) because we're getting married at a restaurant that used to be a bank and we love the history behind the space.

It all depends on what you want. We considered magnets, but decided to go a different route.

I considered the same thing but magnets would have either been heavier and/or bulkier and then you'd have to worry about how good of a quality a magnet it is (because I've read that some magnets don't cling well) so we just did postcards with our picture on it.
