Reception activities (not big dancers)

Sherrie, on August 16, 2018 at 2:45 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 48

Hello WeddingWire Peeps!
We're having an indoor reception and while there will be a dance floor, most all of our guests don't do the dance thing. We'd really like to have some fun interactive options for our guests. What are your best ideas for indoor reception activities besides a photo booth? Thanks!!

It's indoor so things like that aren't really doable. Hence the question.

I have been to over 30 weddings in my life. Unless the DJ is horrible, I have never been to a wedding where people dont dance. Even people that arent "dancers" dance at weddings. I'd talk to your DJ and let them know you need some awesome class dance tunes played and get yourself on the dance floor.

I appreciate the response, however, I'm looking for activities that are not dancing. Thanks Smiley smile

Hi Sherrie! I agree with the above comment, I would still plan to play music and maybe throw in some of the classic line dance songs! An idea I had you could do is maybe trivia or bingo with everyone? Depending on your theme you could also have additional vendors there at the reception like make a caricature!

We’re not having a dance-y reception, but we’re having a 20-person wedding of just parents, grandparents, and siblings. We’ll have background music playing, but it’s really just food and conversation as entertainment. We also have interactive centerpieces because that’s just an “us” thing. Honestly, though, it’s a short ceremony and reception, so I didn’t really need a lot of other entertainment options.

I think that as long as people are fed and have drinks, they’ll be fine.

FH and I hate dancing and our families aren't big dancers either. We instead decided to do a small wedding with a dinner party atmosphere. We are having a cocktail hour to encourage mingling and socializing. As a surprise, for our guests, we have hired a Vegas-style magician to perform after dinner. We are so excited. We will also have a DIY photobooth available and a selection of board games for guests to play with (since FH and I are avid board gamers).

We also considered renting arcade machines or setting up Mario Kart and similar games on a Wii but, the majority of our guests wouldn't enjoy that.

We'll definitely have dance opportunities but I know many just won't. Strange but true ;-) Line dance songs are happening for sure. It's not that side of things that is the concern - it's more for beyond the dance floor. Thanks for your other ideas! Definitely thinking of something along the lines of trivia. And caricatures would be a ton of fun!

I'd love to hear more about your interactive centerpieces if you are willing to share. That sounds so fun and unique!

Our weddings sound very similar. We are inviting immediate family and one friend (and their SO) each. We will have 22 ppl including us. We are incorporating wooden mind teaser puzzles into our centerpieces as we like the aesthetic look and they double as a fun activity if people are bored between courses.

    That sounds fun!
Our centerpieces are some of our favorite games. It’s something we love to do together and with our family, so we thought it would very “us” to have them as centerpieces. Games like Jenga and Head’s Up, where the whole table can play together or just two people. They’ll also be decorated with these DIY game piece vases I made.

If your friends and family are anything like mine, they could easily just talk to each other over the music for four hours and barely notice the time flying by, haha! But as for activities...I'm a trivia host, and we hired the company I work for to run a trivia game during our cocktail hour - you could do that during your reception? The winners at our wedding get first dibs on keeping the centerpieces. We're also having decks of cards for favors, so both the card sharks and amateur magicians in the bunch (yep, there are both) will probably bust into those early and make use of them during the reception.

I know you mentioned lawn games like cornhole are a no-go since you're inside, but what about regular sized Jenga? We're using a pack of markers and Jenga blocks as our guest book. Artsy time for our guests during the reception, and fun memories for us every time we play at home!

Oh my gosh you are the best! Thank you for all of this! Sounds like my crowd and your crowd are pretty similar and I love what you've suggested!! Those are awesome ideas!
You're probably right about the talking - and honestly hearing you say that relieves me because I was thinking that might be the case as well but was nervous about it. I love the other ideas you incorporated - this is a serious help. Thank you!

Love the idea of trivia! Additionally, what sort of technology options are available? Can you think of other ways to make use of TV monitors or projectors - photos, quotes/stories, tribute videos...? This might be a ridiculous idea but how about having a movie on in the background? Like an old classic, 80s film, etc...

I like the scavenger hunt idea! Maybe like an I Spy type game?
Do you have any specific ice breaker ideas? I like that too!
    Thanks for these!

That's actually so much fun!! I could totally see doing that! Projectors are definitely available!
What kind of trivia would you do? Bride/groom trivia? Or?
Thanks so much for chiming in!!
