Puerto Rico is finally booked!!

Crystal, on August 12, 2015 at 2:39 PM Posted in Honeymoon 0 7

Our honeymoon flights to Puerto Rico are FINALLY booked!!! FH really thought the prices might go down closer to the date which is why he so waited so long to book but he finally realized they were going up. Has anyone been to PR? Thoughts on where to eat? What to do?

If you're looking for authentic food make sure you try the alcapurrias (i dont know any other way to say it !) IT'S A FRITTER DISH made out of green plantain and fried. Where in PR? A trip out to Culebra or Vieques is a must! They are islands off the coast of PR and have beautiful beaches. They are a ways from San Juan and you have to take a ferry, but so worth it! Kayaking the bio-luminescent bay is awesome, again on east side of island. On the way out to the bay, there is a long row of restaurants all in one building with so many different types of food, there is also a beach behind this building. The El Yunque forest is great too, you can hike down to a waterfall where people swim, not a difficult hike.

In Old San Juan I would recommend Raíces restaurant, very good local flavor food. There is a trolley that takes you around old San Juan and you can get off at the forts and other places and it was free.

We just got back from PR on Sunday! We got some (great) advice from a coworker to stay near Luquillo or Fajardo to be closer to the beaches and nature, and to just make a day trip to Old San Juan one day (there's not enough to do there to stay there the whole trip). It was great. Two places I would say are a MUST are the Bioluminescent Bay and El Yunque National Rainforest. We chose to visit the BioBay via motorized boat, which was so much more relaxing than paddling ourselves in a kayak. If you're going to go to the rainforest (and you should!), the hike to La Mina Falls is totally worth it! The waterfall is beautiful and swimmable! Two places we never got to visit, but really wanted to (poor planning on our part) was Culebra and Las Playas. Definitely check those places out!

My sister was married there. San Juan was beautiful. Make sure you visit Old San Juan. There's a little place on the hill that is part sandwich shop, part butterfly shop. They take dead butterflies and make mounted art out of it. It might sound gross here, but go take a look. Its beautiful! We also went to the botanical gardens in San Juan. Lovely! That's about all we did since we were down for my sister's wedding and not for a whole ton of time... I really need to go back.

Ok ladies so I need some opinions! We're super excited about our trip but we hate having a trip filled with planned (specific dates and times)events. We know for sure we want to do the bio kayaking, zip lining the Bacardi tour but we're trying to figure out if these are things we can walk in last minute and do or do we need to buy advanced tix for. Any idea?

For the tours in PR in the past we just bought tickets when we arrived. Except when my family chartered a boat to go snorkeling and even that we only did a day or two in advance! I recommend going to Culebra if you can, FYI get up early if you are taking the ferry over. In Viejo San Juan (Old San Juan) I recommend a delicious restaurant called 'Raices'. My fave dish from them is Mofongo con camarones al ajillo (mashed plantain with shrimp in garlic sauce). Depending on where you are at I love the rios for a more seculed water time. Locals would be best to get you to one nearby where you are staying.
