nwr Taking pup to the vet again...*update in comments*

Snarky, on June 17, 2015 at 7:51 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 58

I made an appointment for Mia to go to the vet again tomorrow. We have noticed over the past two weeks that the hair on her stomach/chest area is slowly getting thinner. It started on her stomach and now is up much further her chest. You can kind of see it in the picture. It's not coming out in clumps and it's not bald...but I would rather be safe than sorry. She's not scratching it and she's not red.... Anyone have any idea what it could be? I'm going to take another "sample" in the morning to rule out the worms making a come back.

I don't know what it could be, but it's good you're taking her to the vet. I'm sure that will give you peace of mind. I know it's hard worrying about our furry friends. :/

    What food is she on?

In my experience, a lot of hair loss is related to something internally like a food allergy. More specifically to the "filler" stuff like wheat and corn that dogs don't particularly need in their diet. Thankfully, there's plenty of "grain free" food options out there, even if it is more expensive.

She is on Blue Buffalo. We chose it because we thought it was one of the better foods out there and the vet said it was a good option.

Good catch Christine. Fiona sometimes loses hair in her pits from her "easy walk" harness. Blue Buffalo is a great food, however I have seen some dogs not react well if there is an unbalanced mixture between the kernels and those tiny little balls. IDK what the difference is but I've been told people's dogs had weird reactions when they got to the bottom of the bag and it was mostly the little balls and only a few kernels if you have that kind. They do offer a ton of grain free ones.

Also, IDK where you are buying it, but I found a place online that sells it for so much cheaper than any store I've found in person. Petfooddirect.com and is available through ebates if you have that too.

The hair loss started on her stomach though, and moved up to her chest?

My dog had this on his legs. Didn't itch him or irritate him, just patches of hair gone missing. It turned out to be some sort of mite that apparently all dogs get, but only puppies and older dogs get because of not strong immune systems. Vet put him on some meds and the problem went away. No idea why his immune system was compromised, but it cleared up pretty quick.

What type of Blue Buffalo is she on? Our pup was having skin and fur issues and we switched her to the grain free and salmon recipe (from the Wilderness line) and we noticed a huge change in her. The fatty acids in the salmon have made her fur and skin so much healthier.

Christine, look on their website for a code for 15% off your first purchase too. I feed my dog Taste of the Wild and I got 2 30 pound bags for about 28 bucks a piece vs 45-50 in the store.

Oh no! I hope it turns out to be nothing. My furbaby was on Blue Biffalo for a while because I thought it was a quality brand, but eventually he got sicker and sicker, turns out it was too much protein in the Blue Buffalo and his system couldn't handle it. Switched to Science Diet and he's been healthy ever since! I hope it's something as simple as that for your baby!

KellyT she is on chicken. Maybe I should switch to the salmon. I'll ask the vet tomorrow.

Ours was on chicken before, as well. It's definitely worth a shot. I don't know if you have a Petsmart near you, but their return policy is awesome. If you switch to salmon and she doesn't like it or it doesn't agree with her you can return the opened bag as long as you have your receipt.

For me, it's the what has changed in the last two weeks between before it first started And now. Change in food? Sometimes they change the formula and you don't notice it when you buy a new bag. Change in meds? Did she get into something? New shampoo?

It's possible it could be a number of things

Demodex mange is what MrsBest's dog had, and not super common (although the balding pattern sounds similar to what I've seen of it)

It's also possible that the balding pattern is due to a secondary skin infection that happened due to allergies. Normally if it's that, the vet will perscribe you a medicated shampoo and either an antihistamine if it's not that severe, or an antibiotic (which if they don't give right away they might follow up with it if the balding continues)

It's also a possibility that the harness is causing it as well, or that it's working in conjunction with several other factors.

How does her skin look and feel? Does it come up in flaky patches when you scratch her? Is her fur soft or does it feel brittle and hard?

If she's flaky in skin, you could talk to your vet about maybe adding a omega three acid to her diet (you can do that just through regular people fish pills) as a lack of that can cause coat irregularities

Her hair feels fine. There is no flaking at all. The hair doesn't even come out if you pull it. Her skin doesn't look irritated at all. Sigh...very worried about little pup.

Let us know what the vet thinks it is! If it isn't the food then hmmm...I would be interested in knowing what it is.

I'm obviously not a vet or even a vet tech, but I think if it were an outside source say, allergies, pesticides, new cleaner in your home, new shampoo, etc. there would be reddness, rash, flakes, itching.
