NWR: Registry for a childs bday party?!?

Desireecox, on May 18, 2016 at 2:38 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 55

I just attended a birthday party for a 2 year old which was Elmo themed and at the bottom of the email invitation was the registry information for gifts to get him. Now since I am close with the mom I emailed her asking if we need to specificaly buy from the registry or can I get him what I was planning, she said no just order him this specific bed set and that was the end of the conversation. So I ordered the bedding set (at 50 freaking bucks) and at the party he was given gifts from the registry besides one set of their family which gave him a pirate ship.

Now after everyone watched him open gifts I saw my friend confront the family that gave the pirate ship and asked for the receipt so she could exchange it so she could get him something else from the registry.

Is it just me but it seems crazy to even have a registry for a 2 year olds birthday party?

It's crazy, it's tacky, and that is the last time I would ever attend a party from that family if I were you.

That's crazy... You should never ask your guest for the receipt and I would have given the kid a gift card with a card

I think registries for major life events are okay since there is expectation that the gifts will be used for years to come. But for a 2 year old that is ridiculous. Why does it even matter? Half of those items will not be used in a year.

My brother and my aunts always emails and ask for ideas for the kids for Christmas, I'm always happy to send some links to things they've asked for and I'm not getting. Would never ever ever ever set up a kids registry!!!

Yeah, no. I can understand making suggestions for your kids and possibly "wish lists" for ideas, but an actual registry, nope.

When my son had his 2nd birthday, EVERYONE asked what to get him, my answer, "anything with wheels, and no clothes."

I wouldn't be attending anymore parties for this child.

That's insane. My sister has amazon wish lists for her kids, but they're never on invitations. I'm pretty sure my mom and I are the only ones who know about them. I will say they're really helpful for me because I have no idea what they have already.

I make wish lists for my boys at Christmas with ideas or I give a list of what they need. Just ideas to make it easier but I don't require off the list.

Wow. That's definitely super tacky. I'd probably not go to another birthday party for them, but if I did I wouldn't buy off the registry and certainly wouldn't give her the receipt for the gift.

This is how I felt but just wanted to be sure since I do not have kids and this was a first! I understand suggestions but at 2 they are entertained by almost anything and the gift should be what I want to get him not what the parents want me to give.

Also it was an outdoor party with barely any food or drinks and it was 45 degrees and super windy. I spent the past two days sick in bed from a cold from this party. Tacky was an understatement.

    This is weird. lol

First of all, I think huge birthday parties for babies and toddlers are stupid. Of course you should celebrate the child's birth, but honestly, do it low key and get the kid a couple of books and call it a day. Secondly, a registry for shit they should be providing their child? Ridiculous.

I'd be reevaluating my friendship with this mom. She sounds awful!

@Angela same! If someone reaches out for suggestions on what the child likes that's one thing, but a REGISTRY. And confronting the people who purchased off-registry. I'd have smacked the woman and taken the gift back.

    That's crazy!!

My friend lets the kids make wish lists on Amazon but only family know about it..I'm the god mother so I'm included but it's just because people always ask what to get them. She never tells anyone they have to buy from the list and definitely does not advertise it
