NWR: Just got let go from work, way to go!

What's your dissertation about??

Attentional Bias to under and overweight stimulus and its relation to body satisfaction.

Nothing to do with work, but they think im working too hard on it and they are worried it may begin to impact my work.

Enlighten please I don't understand.

@Reggae Lady I am moving out of area, I was due to transfer to new site where i am moving. They have just told me they are withdrawing the offer as my dissertation work is distracting my focus at work and may start to 'negatively impact the company'

God forbid they have educated staff - how detrimental to their business. Idiots.

If you're under contract, definitely get legal advice. Were you a student when they hired you? Cause then their argument your work could detract from the company focus looks shakey to any tribunal.

@MissGeek yeah i was a student when they hired me, they have always been accomodating, but the regional manager that will be in charge of the new bureau has never been keen on me

Stinks. I don't know anything about corporate labor law, but unless they can show that the dissertation detracted from your actual work, I don't think they have a leg to stand on.

That's like saying "Oh, we can't hire this person because they like to run marathons/volunteer with disabled children/feed the poor/raise a family." Everyone's got their own thing that takes up time outside of work, and I KNOW the raising a family thing is off limits legally.

They should probably be more worried about Weddingwire than your dissertation.

I don't understand. What were you doing at work that wasn't work related? We're you actively researching or working on it while at work?

I wasn't doing anything related to it at work, they just think I won't be focusing as much apparently, like KM they should be much more concerned about wedding wire!

First of all, congrats on being about a month away from finishing your dissertation! Second, think of the silver linings. Who wants to work in a place that would punish you for educating yourself? They sound like SOBs to me! I got let go from a job once and it was one of the best things that ever happened to me. Now I have a career instead of just a job. I'm sure you will find a better place to work!

@FML It's all happened really out of the blue, got a call from the regional manager saying what's going on, I even offered to take unpaid leave for a month until after it was handed in and they didn't want to know

Thank you Allison! It was only a stop gap until university was over, but moving is so expensive and I wanted to be able to walk into a job but looks like I'll be applying for jobs and moving unemployed

Yeah, congrats on being almost done! And then hopefully you can get a better job working for a company that's not full of assholes.

They were always assholes but it's the nail in the coffin, I would never work for them again, I won't trash them online but this foreign exchange company name is 8 letters long, starts with T ends with X
