NOT Doing A Seating Chart

Is anyone else not doing a seating chart? Let me explain: Our reception is looking like about 250 people if everyone we invite comes. We're holding it both inside and outside at our venue. Let me explain:

Our reception is looking like about 250 people if everyone we invite comes. We're holding it both inside and outside at our venue. Meaning, there's a wall of glass doors that will all be open during our reception. We will have tables inside and outside, so that guest can choose where they want to sit based on convenience, proximity to noise, what's best for their children, etc. plenty of space also means that we don't have to worry about families being split because there will be plenty of seating options.

I'm aware most people call it "hectic". Bare in mind, I'm from small town KS and here it's completely normal not to have a chart.

I've never been to a wedding with a seating chart. We're getting married next weekend and are expecting 450 and have no seating chart! You'll be fine!

I'm not doing one, either. I'm doing three reserved tables for family and the bridal party. We are having a sweetheart table.

Please make a seating chart. It might be making it easier for you to not have one, but you'll make it absolute hell for your guests.

I would use assigned tables. That can get messy and people may have difficulty finding a table to fit their whole family. If someone comes late it will also be hard for them to find an open seat... whereas if they have an escort card it'll be easier for them to find.

With that many people you definitely need to assign tables.

If you don't do a seating chart, please cater for at least 30% more tables. People will spread out and leave single seats between groups so.....

@Savannah I'm not trying to talk you out of it but I'm interested to know how you plan to have enough chairs, food, alcohol, etc for your guests if you don't know how many are coming? Also how you aren't going to waste money by over estimating to have enough? Because, unless I'm missing a piece to this puzzle, those are the only 2 ways that can go: you don't have enough of things to properly host your guests or you have too much and waste money unnecessarily. I would be so much more than shocked if you were able to nail a guestimate (pun intended) right on the head.

I am so glad you brought this up! I was in a very similar situation. I had about 200 people coming (initially) and I did not want to do a seating chart because it was just way too many people. I didn't want to deal with the "she wants to sit here but not there", "this person can't sit with this person" and so on. When I went to my 2 week prior meeting with the venue, they said I "HAVE" to make one. That it's the only way their servers will know what meals go at which table. I tried to point out that I was going to put this on the table cards for each family but apparently that's not good enough either. Soooo I ended up having to make one.

@Savannah Wait, what? No RSVPs? How do you envision that coming together?

Marion, petty Betty all the way. lol I asked FH if we could just play musical chairs to find a seat, he gave me this look. Lol

Janae, why are only your VIPs important enough to get reserved seating???

I'm sure this is horrible of me, but I'm not going to be stuck in an extremely uncomfortable situation trying to find a seat. I would honestly leave.
