Not doing a registry- what to expect?

Im having my shower in June. My FI and I have been living together since August. I already owned a house and he had an apartment, so we ended up combining our household belongings. Due to this, we have doubles and even triples of some kitchen equipment, living room decorations, bathroom stuff, etc etc. Because we have so much of everything, we decided not to do a registry. We sent nothing out with the shower invitations. We also feel like it’s tacky to ask for money or do a “honey fund”

My SIL and mom both agreed that if we don’t give people direction, they’ll just give us money anyway or “whatever they hell they want” which could potentially result in us getting more junk we don’t need. My SIL(who married my brother in 2016 and lived with him a year before the wedding) said we should have at least gone to look because they ended up registering for things they didn’t even realize they wanted/ needed like picture frames, cake cutter, champagne flutes, luggage, and monogrammed items.

Would it be too late to backtrack and register if we ever decided to? And if we still decide to forgo it, what have been other bride’s experiences with not having a registry? What did you end up getting?

Agree with PP. If you're having a shower your best bet is to make at least a small registry so you don't wind up with stuff you already have or don't want. We're not doing a registry since we've both owned homes for years and already had to get rid of so much when we merged households. So for me, no shower.

All good suggestions, but again all stuff we have. We don’t camp or play sports, I’m an entertainer so I already have nice platters, cutting boards, equipment, we got fine china as a house warming gift. We don’t decorate the house for any holiday but Halloween, and my fiancé already had rooms and yard/ gardening things. I supposed we could do board games, luggage. Can you register for things like personal care products like blow dryers, shampoo, soap, food, things that run out quickly or is that taboo?

I would still set up a small one. That way people who want to give a gift will have some direction. You can always thank them for the gift and they won't know if you end up returning it later.

I think a blow dryer is OK but I wouldn't register for disposable items like food or shampoo. If you literally can't think of more than a couple things to register for then the polite thing to do is either cancel or change to a luncheon.

What about some of the following:

A knife sharpener (so handy, I always recommend this!)

New sheets or towels (I find ours need replacing every year or two)

    New Pillows

Google Home or other electronic items like stereo speakers for your TV

Board games or other hobby items are good

Home decor, mirrors, furniture, artwork or picture frames

Vacuum bag sealer for keeping things fresh

Fun things like a Cookie Jar for your favorite fandom

Are there any appliances you don't have (Kitchenaid mixer, Keurig, Instapot, waffle maker etc.)

    Tools

    BBQ accessories

Items for your pets (if you have them)

Cookbooks or other books (maybe the artistic coffee table ones)

Personal care stuff like blow dryers are fine but, I wouldn't put soap or food things on there.

    New umbrellas

Zoodle-er (tool to make veggie noodles)

    New step stool/ Ladder

    Leaf blower

    New fancy garbage can

    Air purifyer

    Fire pit/ Fire pit accesories

    New cooler

New fancy/ upgraded pillows for your bed

ETA: my comment took forever to post for some reason and some things have been addressed, but I'm just going to leave as-is below.... also, you've gotten a lot a great suggestions, surely enough to create a registry for your shower

a couple the PP said above: board games, stuff for honeymoon (a new matching luggage set, a camera, luggage tracking tags), upgraded things like sheets (you will eventually need these at some point, even if you already have a couple sets, they get worn out over time).

what other things do you have but could use upgrades or add ons? we already have a waffle iron but it's cheap quality so we are registered for a nice one that we wouldn't spend the money on ourselves since we only make waffles once every couple months. We have a cast iron pan but registered for one in a larger size. We have an instant pot, but there are accessories like a steamer basket that we added to the registry.

other ideas: what do you & FH like to do together on the weekends? do you camp? register for a new tent, or air mattress, or sleeping bag! ..... Do you have an outdoor space? how about a new BBQ or nice set of BBQ tools? updated patio furniture? a nice planter box? ..... what holidays do you celebrate? you register for some decorations!

If you didn't want a registry, you shouldn't have agreed to a shower. Since you can't cancel maybe turn it into a bridal luncheon instead?

FH and I have lived together for a year already, and by the wedding it will be 2 years. All of our stuff is really mismatched and cheap stuff we have had since college. We are upgrading everything and then donating all of our current items. I would suggest at least making a small registry with some upgrades to what you currently have.

Storage containers, nice glass food containers, speakers, tools, lawn equipment, a ladder, a step stool, air purifier, tower fans, space heaters....

I would also go through all those items that you have doubles and triples of and pair it down to what you both actually like and what is still in good condition.

What are your hobbies or what do you do for dates? Do you need things for your honeymoon?
