Non-Traditional 'cakes' - Tell me yours!

Raven , on August 22, 2016 at 1:23 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 25

Hey there! I am the huge sweet tooth in the relationship, and my FH is not! There are very few sweets in the world he actually eats, so when it came to our wedding cake we had a nice discussion to try and come to a nice middle ground. We went back and forth on different combos of desserts with no avail.

Then it hit us at the grocery store of all places, cheesecake! We both love/like cheesecake and it's so versatile and can be in a flavor we both like! We called up the bakery we were thinking of hiring for a cake tasting and asked about cheesecake and they can do it! We are even thinking of just having a plain cheese cake and have a topping bar, so everyone can get what they want!

So tell me about your non-traditional wedding sweets and desserts!

FH isn't wild about cake. He likes it and will eat it but its not his favorite. He loves pie though! So we thought we would get a small cake for us to cut and have an assortment of pies for everyone. So we both get what we like.

We both have very different taste in cakes. I love fruit fillings and coconut and exotic flavors and he likes chocolate and yellow cake lol. We will likely have cupcakes of various flavors and other desserts like macarons, tarts and maybe cannolis. We decided on two mini frosted personal cakes in our preferred flavors and I may have a small guest cake as well.

    Yummmmm! I LOVE cheesecake!

We have our cake tasting next week and picked some pretty interesting flavors (i.e., tiramisu cake with chocolate chip filling and kahula with mocha icing, carrot cake, funfetti, and almond cake with praline filling with almond icing) We threw in a couple 'traditional' cakes to try as well but I am excited for the other ones!

@futureMrs.Hawks - Our FH have very similar tastes!

@Spazzy - My goodness! the cake alone sounds glorious, but then you have baklava and galaktoboureko too?! Be still my heart!

@studentloansforlife - I'm on your side for cakes! I love all the other extras too!

We're doing a cupcake tower of different flavors, and a small cutting cake. Saves on the cutting fee and overall cost while still having kind of a traditional aesthetic. Smiley smile

We had a kind-of-traditional cake in that it was a white cake with blackberry filling but the theme was not traditional at all and it wasn't "wedding" like. We also had our baker make us a cheesecake with berry topping that we took to our suite the night of the wedding. Cheesecake is my favorite. I only had 1 bite of our wedding cake.

We had cupcakes (chocolate and vanilla), vegan chocolate chip cookies, and 4 bundt cakes.

We did pecan praline, chocolate, lemon, and pumpkin spice (November wedding.)

They were all huge hits!! Smiley laugh

We are doing Smith Island Cakes (official cake of MD - our theme is MD basically). That being said, when cut properly, they only get about ten slices out of them. So we are doing 9 cakes in 3 different flavors. LOTS of choice! Smiley smile

FH and I will be cutting in to a small naked cake that will actually be 2 layers of raspberry swirl brownie :-) the rest of the dessert are cake truffles (basically cakepops without the sticks) in 6 different flavors. Red velvet, Double Chocolate, Strawberry Champagne, Cherry Amaretto, buckeye (peanut butter chocolate). and pumpkin spice.

My girlfriend had carrot cake at her wedding with a pale frosting of some kind. It was surprisingly good and you felt like it was somewhat healthy when everyone had to take home giant slabs of it.

I don't know what we're doing yet, but another idea I've heard is a literal cheese cake. Savory cheeses like brie, camembert, maybe a sharp cheddar, etc. Basically a cheese plate, haha.

FH's cousin had donuts at her wedding. She had a "traditional" cake too, but the donuts were my favorite. It was the couple's favorite donut place that was popular on their college campus. A sweet and savory mix could be good for those who don't care for sweet stuff.

Does anyone remember those icebox cakes growing up? My grandmother will make it for me on my birthday, but I haven't seen it anywhere else in ages. They're made with thin chocolate cookies stacked with whipped cream and milk, allowed to sit and soften overnight. If I could have any wedding dessert I wanted, logistics be darned, sky's the limit, I would have an icebox cake the size of a table.

I just wanted to say that we went through our cake tasting on Saturday and we talked with the Chef directly and he loved the idea of the topping bar, so it's officially a go! I'm so excited! We are doing a blueberry pie filling topping, fresh strawberries, fresh whipped cream, caramel sauce, chocolate shavings and sprinkles. Yum!

I personally don't like cheesecake so I would not be able to have dessert at your wedding. Is there a way you could do cheesecake and something else?

Aside from that, I am doing a dessert table with mousse, cupcakes, and tarts. My guests will have plenty of options to choose from.

I ordered some tiramisu, strawberry, lemon, and black and white (chocolate and white) cakes from my grocery store... And my mom baked an apple pie. When I got home the next day from our hotel, they were all gone. LOL

We have been seeing lots of tables with multiple smaller cakes rather than one large one! That way there are plenty of flavors and they're easy to cut Smiley smile Still can be made very cute!
