Newbie Needs Opinions/Ideas! DIY/Cheap/Free Skills Needed! Rockabilly! (long)

ariel, on August 27, 2012 at 10:22 AM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 29

Hello, I'll start by introducing myself. I'm Ariel and I have a wonderful fiance B. who I will *hopefully* be marrying the 22nd of September. (Our date has changed a couple times due to unforseen circumstances...now things are back in place!) That brings me to my next point lol.

I am a huge DIY person. As a matter of fact, I am also a frugal person. Our wedding budget is actually $300 including marriage license. We don't want anything huge, but we still want something everyone will remember. So we are getting married on the water, the reception at one of our parent's homes, I am making the bouquet, as well as the garter, the cupcakes, doing my own hair and make up, & my own invites. Here is the fun part...it's rockabilly themed.

I need ideas on how to decorate. I was thinking gumball machines on each table, but what else? I need cheap please!

Any websites where I can get free wedding stuff, trade wedding stuff, discount items for this theme would be amazing, as ebay is worn out!

TIA

You could hit the thrift store and stock up on obscure records and use them under centerpieces. You can also put guitar pics on the tables (buy in bulk). I'd recommend buying personalized pics but I don't think they'd be in your budget.

Your music playlist will set the tone so make sure you have it set up for hours of endless rockabilly.

Cute dress! Not real familiar with rockabilly, so I am not much help, but you can maybe look at orientaltrading.com for some unique cheap stuff. Ebay has been my best friend in planning my wedding. Good luck and post pics, I would love to see what you come up with!

Oh, excellent ideas Tiny dancer! My friend made bowls out of old records for munchies at her wedding. And definitely, music is a cheap, fun, unique way to instill personality into your wedding!

Angel, Rockabilly is kind of 50s rock and roll theme.

You can't buy or sell things here, but your can check craigslist, the weddingbee classified ads, etc, for cheaper wedding things. We also have a great thing here at wedding wire called Pay It Forward, where brides are willing to send things they no longer need to a bride who does! You should just type it in the search bar over on the side ---->

Check out your local craigslist. They have a barter section where you might be able to find someone with stuff you are looking for and have something to trade for it.

Will you even be able to get food for $300? I can't even cook for 30 people without spending $500 ... for good quality food that is

Lol Future Mrs. T, It's a very small gathering. Literally our family is the majority of who is coming with about 35 guest total. However we are doing small scaled items since it is at an awkward time of day, about 7 PM. So we were doing just some mini sliders and such. Most cooking by us and what family is attending.

That, and I'm from a family who coupons religiously.

I don't know, most would probably find it trashy, but it's still my wedding (and hopefully my only one Lol!) and we're simple people. I'd love a $4000 dress and a barn wedding with a dance floor and everything, but that's just not us as a couple...that and he's leaving for Air Force in the Spring so all of our money saved is for our son right now. :/

No one should call your wedding trashy! There are beautiful weddings with a budget of $100, and there are beautiful weddings with a budget of $100,000! It's not how much money you have, it's how you use what you have, and how you treat your guests that counts! I'm sure your wedding will be lovely, and fun!

Just avoid blue tarp and plastic cereal boxes as card boxes.

You can get a guitar pick punch to make guitar picks out of scrapbook paper or such. Try ebay? (even though I know you said you've worn out your ebay!)

Ariel, I love your idea, and $300 is totally doable if the family is contributing to the food. The food is usually the most important part, and if it's a family gathering, everyone could bring a dish and it can be awesome! When my parents got married (I was 10), they had he whole family to bring their best dish, I still dream about the Lasagne, lol!

You said your friend had records she used as dishes? Perhaps you can fin a way to use them in the centerpieces/decor? Also, googled rockabilly centerpieces and found a few that look to be pretty diy/inexpensive, especially if you can find the stuff at yard sales/thrift stores near you:
