Met with the DJ today and...

My fiance and I are working on playlists together that serve as a guide to our DJ what songs we want to hear.

1) reception music for when dinner is served

2) dancing and afterparty (club vibe)

3) songs for first dance and wedding party entry

I'm picking out the music for as folks are being seated for the ceremony but that's easy because it's going to be all Dave Koz, then what my MOH and I will walk to (Emily by Dave Koz), the recessional (Now That I Found You by Terri Clark), grand entrance (not sure on this one yet), during dinner will be some popular light classical stuff, cake cutting will be "Just The Way You Look Tonight" by Frank Sinatra and then our first dance will probably be "Me and You" by Kenny Chesney. I'll give him a few do not plays, but I'm going to tell him a lot of Disco era stuff, "Celebration" by Kool & The Gang, stuff like that...yeah, you can tell I'm a 70's baby...LOL :-) No line dances though!!!

Just a few key songs. Narrowing down a play list was such a daunting thought. We picked processional, my entrance, recessional, first dance, father daughter dance. We're telling him classical for prelude and unity ceremony and mix it up for the rest. Guests will be encouraged to make requests.

I've been keeping a running list on my phone that I add as I hear them. I have quite the list already!

I picked out the key songs, and then made a list of songs that FH and I like. It was pretty generic, but it gave our DJ an idea of what music we like so he knows to play those songs a little more. Perhaps list some of your favourite artists and types of music that you like (80's, country, rap, etc) so that he has something to go with.

We picked out must plays and do not plays and ceremony/processional/first dances etc. If it wasn't in his database, he got it for us. Otherwise we gave him free reign to feel the crowd and play what kept the party going. He advised that giving him a specific list of songs often leads to the dance floor dying down. I let the experts use their expertise. Our dance floor was rocking!

We picked out the key songs and then gave our DJ a list of about 20 or so songs that we like. When we met for our final meeting I told him that was the overall vibe we were going for and, with the exception of a few do not play songs, to play whatever he felt fit best.

Kelly, that's hopefully what we are going to do. My DJ is a good friend, and he really overwhelmed me today. I was thinking, he was picking the music...isn't this why I asked you to do it? I have a better concept of what he wants from me, which is a lot what Kelly says, but my brain goes from show tunes to jazz, to R&B, to Motown, to classical...I need to focus and my ADD brain, just isn't that good.

Don't try to pick out all the music; you'll drive yourself nuts! We gave our DJ a list of artists and some specific songs that we like, and he took it from there.

Yeah, FH and I are having a friend DJ for us, so we'll just assemble a huge playlist. And if all else fails, there's always Pandora. Haha.

Not sure thats every something we would request of a customer. We leave an open option for you to let us know 10 or so songs you like. Dont stress to much! Its his job the manage the music.

I would seriously lose it if I had to do that. We're having a hard enough time picking out the key songs. We obviously are telling our DJ the vibe we're going for but it's their JOB to do the music.... I would cry if I had to put together a sort of playlist... just far too much work.

If he wants you to pick out all of the music then I honestly wouldn't hire him bc that's his job - why have a DJ if you're going to do his job for one?

You should only be responsible for picking the songs for special moments (ie: first dance, father daughter dance, etc). Give him a must play list and a do not play list. Based off of those pics, any good DJ would be able to pic good songs.

Ugh, I need to do this.

Hey Karen, That does sound overwhelming. I agree that you should only be responsible for picking key songs and maybe putting together a 20-song dance playlist to let the DJ know what you like.
