Learning to write your new name...

Lauren, on December 16, 2018 at 8:42 AM Posted in Married Life 0 58
Haven't tied the knot yet, but FH made a comment the other day that I didn't even think about! "You ready to learn how to write your name again?"

Mind.....blown!! Ha!
The thought never crossed my mind. I'm not worried about just writing my new name..it's the learning to write it in cursive for signatures that has me concerned. 😂

After that comment I immediately started practicing writing my new name and it looks like two different people wrote the first and last names. 🤣

Anyone else think about this!?

Nope... not until your post LOL!!! Sooo this will be interesting! Also this got me thinking about work. I’ve worked at the same place for 10 years (will be 11 by the time we get married). I wonder how much of a pain that will be to have everyone know me by my new last name lol

Oh boy!! That'll be interesting for sure! Luckily I don't have that problem. I'll start working at a hospital (hopefully) a few years after we tie the knot. So people will only know me by my married name. Smiley laugh

I'm not look foward to the name change process though!

You and me both!! Like everything we have ever signed up for you have to change, but you have to do it in a certain order. That’s probably something we should start on is doing the research and making a detailed list in order of what we need to do, where we go first, and what we need to bring. The things we do for the people we love!

    Right!!
Did you know there is a service that does everything name change related for you!? My cousin did that so she didn't have to go through all the hassle.

Also I'm pretty sure you start by signing your marriage license with your married name. Idk where to go from there....haha.

Yep, sign marriage license with with married name. Get certified copy of that license. Use that to obtain a new social security card with new name. Then take both those with new names to dmv to get new ID. Then change name everywhere else.

I think we plan to change my name and our relationship status on FB during our dinner after the ceremony. Smiley laugh (we are having a big reception months later with friends and extended family. The ceremony and dinner will be with just immediate family.)

Yes! It pre-fills everything for you that you can do electronically (and maybe even mail some out?). Only thing I know so far is after the marriage license, you need to go to social security office and change your name on your social card. Then I don’t know if you need to do bank first or dmv. Then I have no clue after that haha

Ha! I do practice writing what will be my new name. I also know that I will forget once I am married...especially at work when people call me by my new name. I think it takes a bit to get use to.

I started practicing but it didn’t take me long. I am a teacher though so it’ll be hard for my students to get used to.

I have! I’m going from 6 letters to 9, and my new name definitely is harder to write in general, let alone sign!! 🤦🏻‍♀️

Nope. The thought hadn’t crossed my mind. I guess it’s like when the new year comes. You’ll probably keep writing last year’s number for a little bit but eventually you’ll get used to it.

That's true. I don't think I'll have a problem remembering to write it. Just learning how to actually write it in cursive and it look nice...haha

Don't sign the marriage license with your married name! Sign it with your current name and then change it at SSA.

But I haven't thought about signing my new name when we get married. I have a scribbly signature anyway so it'll be scribbly with different letters lol.

I’ve been practicing because I had the exact thought of my first and last name not matching in cursive! 😂

I don't sign my name very often and after a year of being married I still have to concentrate when I sign something. Earlier this year we bought a house and if you've ever bought a house you know you sign your name about 100 times. I of course in the middle of it signed one page with my maiden name. They had to reprint the page so we could have a do over, how embarrassing. My married name starts with the same 3 letters as my married name so when I start to write my married name my brain just out of habit wants to finish with my maiden name.

I've done that!! It was more of a joke while we were at a bar one night waiting for a band to play, but then I realized how much I'm going to have to concentrate on this when I do change my name!

You sign the marriage license with your legal name which would be your maiden name until you change it with social security.
