KWR: STD will always abbreviate only one thing in my mind

Miami2NorthernVA, on October 21, 2016 at 3:52 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 48

Whoever decided to abbreviate Save the Date as "STD"?

When I first joined this site I was "why are there posts with titles about sexually transmitted diseases?". I realized it had a different meaning after I read the threads and went to the common abbreviations WW page; however, I still crack up every time I read a post with a title like "Help me with my STDs" or "Complicated STD issue".

STD will always be the abbreviation for only one thing in my mind.

I don't like it, but I've used it. Save the date is just so long to type lol

I get that it is shorter to type, I just can't get past what I think of every time I see it though.

It's also an abbreviation for Short Term Disability. It made me chuckle the first couple of times...then it stopped being funny.

My sisters thought I was so weird when I, out of habit, typed "STD and BM" in a text to them.

O&L thats funny. I think my FH would never stop with those types of jokes. I am in the IT field and we do something called penetration testing. I get jokes about that a lot.

Omg. I never even put two and two together! Also now they call them infections so it's STI. Yuck!

I was instant messaging a coworker at work about the news that he finally proposed to his long time girlfriend. I asked "what about STD's" and he had no clue what I was taking about. I had no clue that he was clueless because STDs have been on my brain for the last month. He said "excuse me". I responded " you need to hurry up and get them" ( they are having a spring DW) and he said "whaaaa?" Finally I called him at his desk to explain the STD term. I told him to use it on his fiancé and she would be impressed. We got a very good belly laugh out of the confusion.

The first few times I logged in I kept having to remind myself that STD meant save the dates and not sexually transmitted diseases.

@Anne that is hilarious! See there are so many ways that using STD in a sentence when you mean save the date, can sound horrible if someone thinks you mean sexually transmitted disease.
