Hurt and confused “dad”

Andrea, on October 15, 2018 at 12:52 PM Posted in Family and Relationships 0 75
My husband raised my daughter since she was 9. Ever sport, awards banquet, paid for everything, etc. no remorse. She asked him to adopt her before she was engaged and even said she wanted it done before she was married. She asked my husband to walk her down the aisle. Her FI asked for her hand. She said she was not even inviting her bio and his fifth wife(just married and didn’t bother to invite her or even tell her.) we put down the deposit, offered to help with almost everything, including a ring (she’s pregnant and he wasn’t saving money for it.) the very next day she sent a text saying she called her dad and asked him to share the aisle walk. I know I am supposed to be supportive. I have been for 22 years even though he tried to turn her against me until she was 18. I want to just enjoy this day, but he and his family are sadistic, always trying to outdo one another by embarrassing people, especially me since I keep my mouth closed. I am no longer happy about this day. I know it is a public humiliation and very uncomfortable for my current husband because he is torn between defending me and being classy. We have lived in a completely different town for 15 years. I don’t want my friends to witness this, I don’t want to pay for him being the honor of the reception by giving the toasts, having the dance, mingling with anyone I know, rehearsal dinner, etc he isn’t willing to pay a dime and has another, younger daughter. She is our only daughter... she said my lack of response to her text telling me made her cry... but I was crying too. I told her my husband and I would still pay for the wedding and reception, as well as her dress. She is still being dramatic, saying I acted cold towards her. Are we not allowed to have feelings because we’re parents??? I don’t even want to pay for an of it anymore since half the reception will be his family and his ego, soaking up the wonderful father act. I thought she had seen through him... I thought it was my husbands only chance to be a “real” dad, or I would not have offered to do so much. They are adults who got pregnant and had no savings. I will honor what I said, but I am so angry and feel used, but I’m sure I will be told I have to accept public humiliation (jokes at my expense) forcing my husband to be near him (hard to be around the man that abused your wife and neglected 3 of her kids.) I’ve tried to work with him over the last 15 years, but he twists it around with the kids. I’m heartbroken, right or wrong... is there etiquette for this? I’m desperate!

Honestly, this is about your daughter. Not about you. She gets to decide who will walk her down the aisle.
That said, it is your money and you have a say. Although, telling her to not include her bio dad will probably create drama. You can tell her how you feel, but again I can't think if how this won't create drama for you both. Maybe tell her you're just contributing X amount and let her plan on her own.

This is your daughters wedding and she wants her biological father to take part of that. Unfortunately to an extent you have to respect her wishes and put your feelings aside. That said, you do not have to pay for 100% of the wedding. Its not your responsibility to take care of your adult kids. I think its so awesome you offered to help so much but it sounds like you sort of want things to go your way (i.e. not including his family) rather than her way. I totally understand having ill feelings towards her bio dad and not wanting him there, but again, it isn't your day.

I'd sit down and have a serious talk with your daughter, if it upsets you so much that he is coming that you no longer want to pay for all of it you need to tell your daughter and help her understand why before she gets too deep into planning.

I am so sorry. Tell her than you know she is disappointed, but so are you. Tell her it would be best if she paid for her wedding, and have the wedding she wants.

Trust me when I say that I understand where you're coming from. Also trust me when I say that your friends and family know what your ex is all about and won't be judging you or giving him the "honor" that he seeks nor will they be making jokes at your expense. You do have to respect your daughter's wishes, but I see nothing wrong with letting her know how you feel about it. In the end though, it's her choice. I respect you for not pulling your funding though because that would look manipulative if you did.

MOB, I don't see pulling funding as manipulative. The bride essentially changed her thoughts on the wedding. Her privilege, but I have NO problem with mom saying we respect and love you, but this is totally different. Then stop and let her talk. Bride will have to say, well I spoke to me dad, and changed by mind. Well that happens. But this is not what mom signed up for.

This is your daughters wedding. Not some tug of war between you and her dad.

Kenisha, do you think that mom should have to pay for dad and his family to attend?

It sounds like she was manipulating you to get you to pay for everything. She told you that she wasn't even inviting her bio dad then turned around the very next day after you agreed to pay and told you she's not only inviting him, but he's walking her down the aisle. I wouldn't blame you for pulling the funding after that manipulation.

I really hate this attitude of "it's her day, she's the only one who matters" that is so rampant on this site. A person isn't entitled to be selfish and inconsiderate of everyone else just because they happen to be getting married.

This. It was either inadvertent or deliberate, but if the bride cannot understand the consequences of her actions, she is not mature enough to get married.

Her mom doesn't have to pay. Her bio dad is still her dad in her mind, hence why she invited him. Manipulation or not it's not the moms wedding and she doesn't have to pay for anything if she feels so strongly about it. It is the brides day, and the bride can pay.

I can understand that this came out of left field for you and you feel hurt. Bottom line, this is her father. The father that you chose for her, she had no say in that. I understand how this could hurt you, but I would caution causing a rift with your daughter over it. Please tell her how you feel. How it brought up old feelings of hurt and betrayal. Remind her of how your husband has stepped up for her. She knows that. I don't think including her father will totally exclude your husband. Put your feelings aside and ask her how you can all work together to make this an amazing day for everyone. Leave the hurt and the pain in the past, where it belongs. He can no longer control you. Sounds like you have a wonderful husband and that is what counts.

    Best of luck to you!

I think you are over reacting it's not about you it's about your daughter. What does having a baby with no savings have to do with anything I am a mom of 7 and I don't have savings but I am blessed beyond words to get to wait for two years so my fiance and I can pay for everything ourselves.

I have a mom who get livid Everytime I bring up my dad. I love my mom and dad both very much but I am much closer to my dad and she hurts my feeling when I talk about my dad. My dad was a crappy husband to her but a wonderful dad to me. and what I have came to the conclusion is that she is so wrapped up from the hurt he caused. That she didn't see that he was a great dad to me.

This is her wedding and I doubt that there will be any remarks about you because it's not about you.

I am so sorry you are dealing with this! And I’m confused by pps comments that you should simply have to get over it because it’s her day. As someone who grew up with an abusive father (abusive to me, but even MORE so to my mother) I would not even consider inviting him to my wedding. Even if I wanted him there (which I don’t) I would never do that to my mother, who spent her life protecting my brother and I, and then raising us on her own.

This has nothing to do with whos “day” it is and with who’s paying (my reaction would be the same even if you weren’t dropping a dime) and everything to do with the fact that your daughter is subjecting you to the abuse that you’ve spent your life trying to protect her from, and then acting like she is the victim.

I am not sure I have the best advice on this, other than to maybe cut your financial contribution to 50% of the wedding, or figure out what % of the guests are her father’s relatives and NOT pay for that. Like if they are 30% of the guest list, then say you’ll pay 70% of the cost. This situation is horrid to begin with and you having to pay for his family is just APPALLING and unfair, and you should not do that to yourself! In terms of being at the wedding, I guess you should just try to avoid them as much as possible and spend time with the people you care about. I know that’s not very helpful, but I think that’s all you CAN do... that, and not paying for HIS guests. Let her ask him for the money for his guests. If he says no, that’s on him! You’re not expected to pay for his family! It’s honestly horrible that she could expect you to do that.

Again im so sorry you are dealing with this. And I’m so sorry that some pps don’t seem to understand that this situation is more than just about who’s “day” it is. I wish there was more I could do to help :/

His family, including his children were invited. The kids were actually in the wedding party, so I don't think it was about me trying to control her. That was never an issue. The change of heart in such a fast turn around is where I am confused and hurt. If I wanted another wedding, I would just throw myself one.

I never told her not to. I asked why the change of heart? One day she is asking to be adopted and walking down the aisle with father who raised her, not intending to even invite bio, the next she wants him completely involved. I am not withholding money I promised. I just needed some guidance on how I am supposed to stifle and swallow having this abusive man take over for a celebration current husband is paying 100% for.

Thank you. My friends are good people. It is his toast and drunkenness, nasty remarks that will forever haunt this day...and no, he hasn't grown up. The kids say he still says unkind things about me whenever he has an audience. Thank you for your support.

I'm glad you had a good dad. He was not one. Ever, to any of his children by their multiple mothers. I didn't ask her to approach my husband to walk her down the aisle or adopt her. I feel like it was hurtful and inconsiderate if she continued to have residual feelings for wanting bio in the pic. His other kids continue to call him dad and go out of their way to see him and I don't say a word, but apparently HE does. He just got married this month for the 5th time, and didn't even bother to tell her, let alone invite her. I would love it if she wanted to wait and pay for it herself. She told me she waned to be married and only do it once. I wanted her to have a special day to share with people who love her and not a courthouse wedding. There will be remarks, because this man has made EVERY.SINGLE. EVENT in my children's lives dramatic, filled with shade and ulterior motives. I wish it were going to be just about her, but it will not be. Thus, asking for HELP to get through this and still enjoy it, get over the hurt caused by my daughter's actions....but you know, hope it works out for you. You may be a little more like your mother than you think, only throwing it a different way.

My heart goes out to you. Some of these comments are not really understanding where you come from in your position in your daughter and husband life. You promised to fund this wedding and with that being said I believe she should have discussed her change of plans with you. I am sure your husband is hurt and my prayers are for his strength thru the whole ordeal. Yes this wedding is about her but if she really wanted things to be about her then she should be paying for everything. May God protect you and your family from the toxic events that may unfold during the wedding and reception. Stay strong and don't let negativity ruin what should be an happy occasion.
