How to involve a young daughter

Jamie, on November 25, 2017 at 12:29 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 12

My best friend is getting married July of 2018. She has a 7 year old daughter. Her fiance is an amazing guy and is going to be writing vows to both the bride and his future daughter, but my best friend is still looking for ideas on how to involve her. Most importantly she is trying to figure out a title for her daughter, not a flower girl but also not maid of honor. Do you have any ideas or suggestions? Thanks!

I personally think it's very sweet when the new parent writes vows to their new child. It's also sweet when kids are included in the unity ceremony.

I don't think the kid is going to care too much about titles. If I were your friend, I'd ask my kid what they wanted to be called and go with that.

I've heard people do sand ceremonies and similar so that kids can also participate.

She could be a mini bride. I saw that recently. It was so sweet.

There's no reason why the kid can't just be a flower girl if they want her in the wedding.

I think people need to think way more about these ideas before they execute them, and the full implication. It's one thing for an adult to later back out of commitment to another adult - it sucks, but has become fairly accepted now. But do you actually want this person to be committed to your kid if you ever get divorced? Are you going to let them stay in your child's life as a parental figure, as they are making a vow TO YOUR CHILD to be, forever and ever?! Because if you wouldn't want that - if you think if you ever were to break up because they cheat on you or any other reason, that you wouldn't want them keeping that kind of relationship with your kid - then don't do it. It's NOT OKAY to have someone make a big ordeal of making vows to your child that you both know they wouldn't fulfill under certain conditions. A marriage is generally NOT between two families, and young children don't get to "keep" the other family if the marriage doesn't work out, because the marriage is actually between two PEOPLE although it impacts two families.

Your friend's daughter could be the ring bearer. She could also be included in the unity ceremony if they're doing one. Best wishes!

I"m sorry, there is something just creepy about jr attendants. I know that in some circles it's always done, but there is only one bride.

I think Stephanie brings up a VERY good point. Blending a family in any way is tough, rewarding work, but for a child to go through a second divorce should that happen? I can't even imagine what that does to them. Of course, everyone getting married has the best intentions and I believe that vows to the kids are a manifestation of this, but marriage is about two people. Two people who hopefully vow to support and cherish the other's children. It's a little different than a biological parent will always be a biological parent no matter what happens with the couple. FWIW, I think vows to children should be done privately. Depending on their age and personality, this may be what they'd prefer too.

I'm not disparaging stepparenting at all and I hope this didn't come off that way; it is an incredibly difficult "job" and callling, and an unimaginably, rewarding and sometimes surprising one, but it's different.

That being said, the things I see the most often are paint pourings, hand tracings, sand/glass pourings.
