How to ask family to cut cake?

Brooke, on September 11, 2018 at 3:57 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 8

We are having a wedding with around 100 people. My family has always recruited other members of the family to help with cutting cake but I'm not sure how to ask without it sounding like a chore? Have other people done this?

What do you mean? Like asking people to cut it to serve to guests?

What do you mean? I'm not sure if I've ever heard of this

I would say just ask since it happens in your family. My cousin volunteered herself and my aunt, so I didn’t have to ask them.

    Hello Brooke!

Maybe you could pose it as an open-ended question that gives them the option to say no if they want to! Something along the lines of "would any of you be able to or willing cut the cake? We'd really appreciate it!"

It is is a chore, so it will probably sound like one regardless! BUT most people (especially family) won't mind doing it at all, so if you ask "hey, we need help cutting the cake to serve to guests after we do our cake cutting" I'm sure they will gladly help.

It is a chore, but if its something that is typically done in your family then I am sure some will be more than happy to help. I agree with a PP - ask it in a open ended question so that those who want to help will respond.

I agree with PPs- just pose an open ended question. Do you have a caterer, though? Our caterer cut our cake and served for us. Some will do so at no extra charge, but some will charge a cutting fee.

If they've done it before and are willing, okay. But, cutting a tiered wedding cake is a bit of an art and takes some skill. I ended up having to cut the cake for daughter's shower (in a restaurant, but our designated server looked panicked, so I took over). It was a 10" layer cake (easily 6" high), that needed to serve 25 people.... The baker had instructed me -- a 6" circle needed to be cut in the center, then wedge-shaped slices were cut from the outer ring and the inner circle. It was a LOT harder and more time-consuming that I expected.... Be sure whoever is doing it knows what they are doing!
