How much cake do i need?

Sarah, on June 14, 2018 at 9:10 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 11
We weren’t going to have a cake at all but... FMIL insists and she is paying for it! We’re going to have a hefty milk and cookies bar and our catering also includes a passed dessert which will probably be s’mores. I hear tons about how much cake gets wasted and I’m assuming with other dessert options not everyone will eat a piece- so do I have to order enough cake for the number of guests we’re having? I was thinking I would order enough for approx 100 servings but we are expecting about 150 guests. I don’t want to throw away a ton but I don’t want to seem stingy!

I think 100 servings is more than enough. The last wedding I was in, we spent about 30 minutes trying to give out probably 80% of the cake at the end of the night.

Our cake was quoted to feed 130. We had 85 guests. We prepped to go boxes with silver doilies and stickers with our date and initials so guests could take some home. And then we took home the top tier.

We had cupcakes leftover. I was giving them out to vendors, the security, the hotel staff, at the end I was left with 4. I would say to not have too much cake as everyone does not eat it.

I was just at a wedding last weekend where they had cupcakes and cake. Only the bride and groom had the cake. There was probably 40 cupcakes leftover. You should be more than fine with 100 people serving for cake.

We have a small 3 tier cake (12" , 10" and 8") and cupcakes. Our cake will serve approx. 75 people per the bakery. I am not a cake person either, but my FH LOVES it. So, he is actually hoping for leftovers.... LOL. With the amount of other options you have, maybe do a small two tier cake or something? Enough to satisfy you FMIL and not give you a ton of waste.

I work in a bakery and I suggest a 12inch round two layer it feeds 50 maybe a little more depending on how you cut it I think it’s a good size especially since your having other desserts or you can do cupcakes but maybe do 40 or 50...good luck!!

My FS and I are not cake people. We are doing a small 6inch round cake for us (mainly for pictures) and then doing mini donuts. We want to have extras for people to take home but we don’t want to be stuck with 30 mini donuts. We are expecting 30 people and are ordering 3 mini donuts per person.

We are only doing the top tier and cupcakes. The rest will be different dessert bars ( cookies, cheesecake, etc) all totaling about $350

I agree with everyone who is cautioning to go with less cake. If your FMIL is paying for it and it's important to her, maybe do a few fake layers. I've seen it done at alot of weddings. You can't tell. That way you have the fancy cake for those who love that tradition, and yet not have it serve more than 75. It also makes for a nice photo. Just throwing out ideas.

If you are planning on having the cake played and served then you should order enough for every guest.. it would be rude to only serve certain guest
