How Far Out?

Jessica, on April 22, 2019 at 12:44 AM Posted in Hair and Makeup 0 19
How far out from your wedding did you start doing hair and make up trials to pick your people?

I have 6 months before my wedding in October and am desperately trying to grow my hair out as long as possible (it's fine and I know the longer it is the better results I'm going to get volume and style wise). My hairdresser and I are on the ball with vitamins and regular trims to keep it healthy and growing to it's max. My next trim I asked her if she could schedule some extra time to play with it so I could see if I liked anything.
I know the sooner I book people the better and hair and make up are pretty much my last vendors to find.

I booked before doing a trial. My wedding planner told me the good ones book a year or more out and it was important to pay a deposit and get my date secured.

I got lucky and used the same hair dresser as my best friend, who got married this past March. So I got to see some of her work and our hair styles are similar so it was like a trial lol. I would say the sooner the better. You don't want to lose someone because you waited too long and there's nothing wrong with booking 6 months in advance. It's pretty much like booking any other vendor.

Most hairdressers recommend doing a trial at less than 3 months. Your hair changes over time, according to things like diet and general health, and so texture, curl, even how well it takes color or setting lotion, varies. If you get a last good cut or trim, you usually want it 4-6 weeks out.

My wedding is also in October and I booked my HMUA this past December. My trial is the end of July. In most instances, you book your HMUA before you have the actual trial. It seems kinda backwards, but you just have to make your decision based on their portfolio and then be very specific about what you want.

I’ve been growing my hair out for quite awhile and it’s fairly long (falls a couple inches below my bra strap) but I’m still going to be getting extensions, mainly to help with the volume. That could be an option for you too.

I booked my hairstylist before doing a trial because as someone mentioned, they book quicker than you would think and I knew I wanted her so I booked. My wedding is in September and we will not be doing my first trial until June.

My make up artist is actually one of my bridesmaids. She has done my make up before and so we aren't really doing a trial, she is going to do my make up for my bridal shower in July and that will act as my "Trial".

Most HMUAs will tell you not to do a real trial until a month before the wedding, this way your hair is closest to what it will be on the day. The trial isn't just for you to see what you like, it's for the hair dresser to practice and get a feel for your hair to make it faster on the day of the wedding. If you do it too early and your hair grows a lot, it could make it harder on the hair dresser.

But if you aren't sure on what style you want, maybe do some basic trials early on so you can test out a few looks. But your official trial should be no more than a month out.

My situation is different, I live in Colorado but the wedding is in Pennsylvania so when I go home, I have to get as much done as possible. I’ve had my hair/makeup person picked out for a while and already had my trial in December, wedding isn’t until September. I would get it booked as soon as possible.

I'm using my regular hair dresser for my hair and make up, she's been cutting and doing my hair for 9 years. I'm getting married in June but since shes familiar with my hair we did my trial in December.

I agree with PP's. I would book soon. You just have to go based off of their portfolio and then be very descriptive with pictures during your trial. Be vocal if you don't like something, and after if you still don't like certain aspects make notes so you can tell them the changes you want for the day of.

I did a trial 13 months out (I actually did two) because I wanted to do one before booking. I'm doing another one next month.

I booked before trials too. My hair stylist is so good that I didn't even feel like I needed one lol.

I would never actually waste all that money getting trials done... It's $70-100+ for trials alone. I booked my people and will have the trials soon. I have my makeup trial this Saturday. I don't think it's wise to go around doing trials without booking cuz they will book up fast.

I'm doing mine stupid early. My wedding is October 12, and my hair trial is May 18. But I've never been to this stylist before, and I want the time to do a do-over, or find someone else, if it doesn't work out. Also, if I like her, I want to see if she'll take me on as a regular client, since I'm kind of looking for someone new, anyway. My hair is long to begin with, though, and I want a half up/half down 'do, so an inch here or there in October isn't going to make a big difference.

I booked before doing a trial because she books up so quickly. My makeup trial is next Saturday, but I am confident I will like it or will have some time to choose another look Smiley smile My hair trial is booked for Sept, but my salon is only about a half a mile away from my house, so I will probably try to get there a bit earlier for a trial.

I booked my gal and don't plan on a trial for another month or so. She's starting a new business and I went to try her out (I'm not scared of having bad hair) and had her dye my hair Platinum Blonde and I tell you what I wont go anywhere else from here on out.

I'm using my regular hair stylist for my wedding. So I'm not doing a trial until a month before. I'm fine with that though since he's very familiar with my hair and the look I'm trying to achieve.

I'm booked for wedding day (September) hair/makeup and a trail (in August) with a salon I regularly go to for hairstyling. I am going off of online reviews and the experience I've had at the salon and hoping for the best! In my area, trails cost quite a bit and I don't have time and money to throw away trying different people.
