How big of a cake?

Megan, on April 6, 2018 at 11:08 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 20
I'm probably having 125 - 150 guests at my reception. How big of a cake should I consider?

You should have enough for everyone in case they all want cake.

This is something to talk to a baker about because tiers can vary in sizes. A professional baker will know exactly what size you need to serve that many people. A grocery store bakery department is also a more budget friendly option that could help you.

I am having around the same number and we will have a small two tier cake and then sheet cakes to serve.

I had my baker quote me a cake for 125 ppl and advised we’re keeping the top tier for anniversary. It ended up being 4 tiers.. 3 tier would have been for guests.

If you were actually trying to figure out what size cake, that is a question for your baker. They can easily tell you what size will provide X number of servings.

But many brides seem to think it's best to order less cake. I have seen people run out and it's embarrassing.

Ours is the same size for 130-140 guests.

Ours is the same guest size and our baker suggested 4. We originally only got 3, but a few weeks ago my mom got nervous and called the baker to add another tier on in order to feed everyone!

I guess it depends on what size in inches each tier is. She said i would need 12,10,8 and 6 🤷🏽‍♀️ Im no Betty Crocker. I’ve made one cake in my whole lifetime. 😂

Honestly, after having worked many weddings, not many guests eat the wedding cake. Most of it gets thrown away or having to find room to store in the fridge. I would suggest cupcakes. Lots of benefits to them and out of the several hundred weddings I have worked, I've noticed guests seem to prefer cupcakes over cake. But, it's all up to preference, after all, it is your big day!

We're also having a four tier (12-10-8-6) for 120. They suggested a two tier and sheet cakes, but I wanted that four tier cake! It's the one thing I got just because I wanted it.

Our guest list is 140 and we got a three tier cake that feeds about 80. My mom is making a ton of other desserts, which I know my family will be all about, so we figured we wouldn’t need a larger cake.

We have a guest list of 150 but I'm anticipating about the same number as you, 130 maybe, as we invited many guests from out of state/across the country. Our baker planned for a three tier cake just in case. However, FH and I are also big on sweets so we included an order of cupcakes for kids invited to the wedding as well as a dessert table through our caterer with a spread of different tastes.

The best bet would be to ask a baker. If you had certain places in mind to order you cake you can also see what they suggest. Something else I want to point out in case some people aren't aware. Be careful of choosing a certain serving suggestion and being close to that depending on if you have the cake place cut it for you or if you are cutting and serving it yourself. I've noticed that the serving size for a piece of cake for a guest is smaller than a normal people would think to make. Say you have a cake that suppose to serve 100, but If you don't cut the sizes right it would end up serving less.
