Honeymoon in the Philippines?

Caitlin, on January 21, 2018 at 6:36 PM Posted in Honeymoon 0 13
Has anyone honeymooned in or traveled to the Philippines? FH is half Filipino and we would like to go there for our honeymoon (thinking about 10-12 days including travel time - usually overnight flights). I would like to start off in Ilocos, which is where his grandparents immigrated from, and end at a resort in Palawan (thinking the El Nido resorts, as they seem the most well known). We will probably go in January or February, as I am a teacher and get time off then. Any advice, anecdotes, or input would be greatly appreciated! My biggest trepidation is travel between Ilocos and El Nido and the food - I haven’t heard the best things about the food there from review websites.

You will love it! I’ve traveled to Philippines several times for business, the country is beautiful and the people are so amazing. Any time you travel abroad bring your own snacks from home (protein bars etc) and stomach meds just in case.

Thanks! I’ve heard great things, including from FH’s army buddy who served there as a missionary for 2 years. Thanks for the tip about food - I can be a bit picky. Have you been to Ilocos or El Nido?

My fiancé is Filipino (born & raised there). We’re going next year for a belated honeymoon/anniversary trip. I’m so excited! He hasn’t been back there in several years & I haven’t been yet. We’re probably going to stay in the resorts in Cebu after visiting his family in Laguna. I’d love to go to Palawan but it’s difficult to get to and we’re nervous to travel that far south with all of the civil unrest in that part of the country. We’ll likely save that for a future trip when things have calmed down. My fiancé usually warns not to wear your jewelry when you’re outside the resort & be aware of pick pockets. Good luck planning!

Ilocos Norte and Ilocos Sur are located in the northern part of the country. It's rich in history, plenty of resorts that you might enjoy.

El Nido is more southern part of the country. I've never been there buy it's a very popular place for tourists. You can check Ilocos and El Nido out on trip advisor. Goodluck!

Is there much unrest in Palawan? I was under the impression it was mostly in Mindanao, but that’s old information.

He’s generally hesitant to travel anywhere that close to Indonesia right now after the whole ISIS thing in Marawi last year. There were reports of tourists being attacked recently in Palawan & the US has a travel advisory against going to that island. But I’m assuming it’s like going to any country- you can’t go wandering by yourself through unsavory areas and expect not to get robbed.

Oh wow! I was unaware, thank you! I believe we would fly from Manila to El Nido and be taken straight to a lounge then be ferried to our resort (based on info from the resorts website) but that is certainly something to consider. Thanks again for bringing it to my attention.

The Philippines is a 3rd world country. Although beautiful, it can be very dangerous. Be smart. As an American female, don't go anywhere alone. Wear no jewelry. It's such a beautiful, eye opening experience. I don't stay in tourist areas when I go so i honesty don't know those areas. But in any case, go in remembering it is not America, not even close. Don't carry a lot of money on you. And you can also bargain almost anything over there. It will be an experience you will never forget.

What about Boracay? It's beautiful there- I felt completely safe when there, and it was only me and one other (female) travel companion. There are different "stations" along the beach- we stayed in "Station 1," which is one of the quieter areas...

Lots of shops and restaurants to enjoy, right on the water's edge. It was gorgeous! Flew there directly from Manila...

PS- while in Manila, head into Makati.... very "cosmopolitan" section of the city- with LOTS of malls/shopping.

    Have fun!

I was in El Nido last summer. It is spectacular. Absolutely beautiful! Not once did I feel unsafe. The water was an amazing temperature. We boated out to different islands, went snorkeling and had such a lovely time!

Palawan is amazing! I did a trip with TAO Philippines which was spectacular, if a bit rustic. There were several honeymooners on that trip. I loved the food...
