Honeymoon: Ideas, Travel Agent?

Christine, on May 20, 2017 at 8:04 AM Posted in Honeymoon 0 13

My FH and I are in the early stages of planning our honeymoon after our November 11 wedding. We want to honeymoon somewhere for 6-10 days for close to $2500 total.

We're picturing either somewhere swanky in Latin America (but like, boutique resort, not Sandals), or somewhere romantic in Europe (possibly Italy).

We live in FL, so flying to Costa Rica is cheap ($300pp round trip), and we're considering that. We're also trying to determine if somewhere else south of the border gives more bang for the buck.

It's been tough so far to meet our budget + feel that we're really treating ourselves to something special. Anybody do something like these options for a similar budget?

Also, do travel agents really not charge for their services? How do they make money? I've read lots of forum posts and may be interested in contacting one, but we usually travel via less-commercial means like camping and Airbnb so do travel agents help with that sort of thing too or just hotels?

TIA everyone!

Costa Rica is a good option! What about Cuba? (I really want to go there.)

Europe will likely not work in the budget -- save up for a fun 5 year anniversary trip for that one.

I would avoid a travel agent in this day and age if you have the time and patience to plan.

Costa rica is a great option, it's easy to move around and has tons of fun things to do. Mex is always a good alternative (Cancun is great).if you want to be a bit more adventurous cartagena colombia is a nice place to visit. Although not my fav airline spirit has killer deals to go there

So I am a TA and I will break it down. 95% of our money is made from the supplier like the hotel or cruise. If a client calls for airline only I charge a fee because airline's don't pay us. So if we get paid from supplier why would we charge you. In fact most agents save clients money not charge more.

My first idea would be Cancun so many choices on any budget. Mexico just had the biggest sale of the year on Cinco De Mayo. Just wait for a sale.

We don't sell Airbnb but we can sell their competition. I don't find renting a house a vacation but if someone asks I will sell it.

If you really aren't sure where you want to go, AAA or some other sort of TA would def be the way I'd recommend going. They have so many resources and know the area they're sending you to, can give you options and such.

What are you looking to do during your honeymoon? If you're from FL, then you likely can go to the beach whenever you want, so I'm going to assume you want to go some place that has more than just beach days and relaxing by the ocean? I'd look into a cruise or trips somewhere you can do a lot of exploring rather than some place tropical since you have the tropical at home.

Iceland is relatively inexpensive and it's beautiful. Also, you can get travel packages to Europe.

Thank you everyone for your comments! You've given me a bunch of wonderful suggestions, I will research them all and see which areas we haven't thought about might give us the right vibe.

It sounds like cruises are the most-cost effective way if we decide to do Europe, which is kind of a bummer because my fiancé's a merchant marine and spends six months a year on a ship so he's kind of anti-cruise on vacation LOL! But for a neat price and itinerary like that I will definitely look into it. Besides, we've agreed that this vacay should be different from our usual travel preferences in that we should pamper ourselves; and cruises are the best at that!

I also appreciate the travel agent information and suggestions. I feel much better informed and after doing my own research will consider reaching out to one them for a more knowledgable source on the areas we like!

Thanks again! Have a great day everyone!

Thanks Kate, I've never been that far north in the winter. I have in the summer (including summer solstice) and love the long days... The long nights are definitely a good thing to take into consideration.

If you are having trouble staying within your budget, look on Groupon. You have to book close to your travel date than most people are comfortable with, but you will DEFINITELY find something within your budget

Why are you against Sandals? My FH and I are honeymooning at a Sandals resort in Jamaica, and we're paying $4000 for 8 days, including airfare from the middle of Kansas.

@Shanyn We've never stayed at a Sandals, but we feel like we wouldn't like it. I think maybe it has something to do with the fact that we live and grew up just south of Daytona Beach, FL. Staying in a huge hotel where we can lay on a beach with a ton of other people doesn't sound like a vacation to us because it's too close to home :-P We still like beaches but the less people the better.

Sandals sounds great; all inclusive, pampering, relaxing, beautiful.. I think if it weren't our honeymoon, we'd be more inclined to try it out and see if we like it, but since it is I want to play it safe and avoid it since we have a mental block toward it lol :-)
