Help coordinating men's attire, need suggestions :+)

Harleybeachbride, on October 11, 2016 at 5:49 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 20

Hello ladies,

So now that I'm past my recent dress dilemma, I'm struggling to decide the best look for my groom and his best man/groomsman as he's leaving this to me cuz he's not much into formal wear....JOY! lol

The issue I'm having is choosing the best colors for ties and vests that best match the girls dresses (as I fear the color blue could look PROMMY??) and also, what style tux would look best....I too am clueless abt men's attire, there are so many styles/combos to choose from?!

The best I've come up with is in this collage....leaving the blue out of ties/vests and can maybe add that pop of color in boutineers? Would I choose a slightly different style or look for groom as opposed to best man and son as groomsman?

Suggestions and pics are much appreciated....what styles/color combos you think would look good or pics of your bridal party if u had same colors? Ocean front ball room, so I would say I'm going for a classy, beachy elegant look?!

Thank you,

:+)

Ok, I know nothing about the styles of the tuxedos themselves but, I actually think blue button up shirts that match the BM's dresses and blue boutonnieres would look really sharp.

Check out Black Tie Guide. I would suggest just ask them to wear a grey suit, no vest (dated and hot), and then give them each different ties with subtle patterns. Matchy matchy groomsmen is a real American habit that isn't the most attractive. Most men have a grey suit, so if you provide the ties you are good to go. You could do the same color family ties but different patterns. I'm confused about the tux question. If this is a wedding before 6 pm, then no one wears a tux. This is a fashion rule, not an etiquette rule, so it's a victimless crime. Tuxes are for after 6, and they only come in three variations: black, midnight blue (not navy or bright blue), and a hot weather version of black tux pants and off white jacket. The collar on tuxes is never a notch, always peak or shawl. A notch collar tux is based on a lounge suit pattern that the manufacturer is banking you will be unknowing enough not to notice or known that it's incorrect.

If you want them all to wear a three piece suit, just be aware that most men don't look good in one (much like a double breasted suit, depends on the guy's build) and don't have one. Buying a new suit is a significant expense and requires quite a bit of time for proper tailoring. No one should ever rent a suit or tux. Go grey and they will be able to wear what they have in their closet.

Second option is blue blazer and tan pants. Way more casual feel, so it depends on your formality level. I also would be wary of a blue blazer with dark blue bridesmaid dresses.

Third, which would be my choice, is a light brown linen suit, 1/2 lined. Perfect for a beachy wedding, and goes with your bridesmaids dresses. However, many men don't have one. Again, a decent suit is a significant expense so you would have to decide if they could afford it and if you want to ask that of them.

If you need more info or are interested in men's fashion, the boards on Style Forum are very good. If you search "wedding" you will get a ton of info.,

You could even just do black or grey vests, pants and tie with a blue shirt. ETA - Also, I agree with doing suits vs tuxes!

Thank you pp...the ceremony starts at 330 but evening reception is why I'm thinking more formal or at least semi formal?

FH at least told me he wanted dark gray or black....doesn't want brown so that at least helps. This is my venue....we'll be married inside rather than on beach.

Based on the venue and the time of day, I would go with nice suits with jacket and vests so they can take the jackets off if they want, after the ceremony. I do really like the look of suits better than tuxedos. I think tuxedos make men look like penguins. I also recommend the grooms suit be a shade darker or lighter than the groomsmens. Then he stands out just a touch. ETA - you could go without the vests too. It's really up to you. Look on Pinterest, there's tons of ideas on there.

Black is really only for funerals and tuxes. Charcoal grey is about the darkest grey but I think it is discordant at a beach wedding. Totally up to you guys of course. I would roll with whatever grey they have in their closet, and assume most have a medium or lighter grey. Ties, pocket squares, and bouts will personalize each outfit and add pops of color and interest.

    Your venue is so beautiful!

I hear you on the vests and tuxes maybe too formal his mom actually said they need tuxes?!

FH has very broad shoulders and has a boxy thick chest. ...he's very self-conscious about it for some reason? He is uncomfortable in suit jackets in general so said he thought that once he took off his jacket (which he plans to do at reception) having a vest would look better than just a shirt and tie?? Honestly, I think it might look foolish vs just the shirt and tie??

Luckily it's just his bestman and 1 groomsmen (his son) and we'll be purchasing whatever he ends up wearing....at least I don't have to worry about a huge bridal party while figuring this all out! :×)

I highly recommend style forum boards, for you and FH. Once you have a working knowledge of what fabrics and styles look best on him, and why, you will be really surprised at the difference. Again, these are all victimless crime things, but a vest without a jacket is substantially less "correct" than a shirt (take the tie off, roll up the sleeves). Weddings are really a bastion of bad men's fashion, and almost every common trend makes men look worse rather then letting them look as stunning as the bride. I think America has a whole thing about men taking an interest and pride in their dress being effeminant, and as a result men and women are really clueless for big events. It's too bad because the proper suit and accessories can really make a huge difference in self confidence, presentation, and the overall look and feel of the wedding.

@alwaysMs - you mentioned renting a suit is not wise, and buying a suit requires too much tailoring....what other avenues might one explore? The guys don't own a grey suit, my FH literally has 1 black suit and his son too I think.....not sure about his best man but I'm thinking slim pickings on the formal wear wardrobe too!! Yikes...lol

They need to buy suits and have them tailored then. Like a wedding dress, you need a really good tailor and adequate time for alterations. If your FH and his son have black suits already then you could go with black. It's not right, but at least some portion of your party is provided for. Let me put this is context, rentals look comically bad to anyone who knows anything about clothes or fashion. But that may not be something you want to sweat, you know? I think you have a couple choices. First, everybody buys a medium grey suit. Not the same suit, because people look their best in different cuts, weights, and styles. All in the medium grey family though. This is a great option if everyone can afford a decent suit because every man on the planet needs a medium grey suit. You can wear it everywhere, including funerals, unlike black. Obvious downside is the expense, so this may not be a practical plan. Option two is to ditch the suit completely. Blue blazer and tan pants, or any color pants and any color shirt (no tie). Upside is that a beachy wedding is totallly appropriate for this style. Downside is that it is really casual and your dress is not really casual so it may look like you guys are attending two different events. However, it is incredibly common these days for the bride to be substantially more formal than the groom and his party (check out all the beach weddings where the bride has a train and the groom is in a vest and sneakers). Because it's so common now, people probably won't bat an eye. Major upside is that you keep the expense down for everyone. Third is to get rentals. Again, there is no rental that looks even close to as good as a well tailored outfit. However, this is the lowest expense and if your people don't want to own a suit then this probably makes the most sense to them. Maybe you ask each groomsmen individually what they want to spend, like we do with bridesmaids?

Just to be super clear, this is all inside baseball to many people who happily rent stuff. The difference is really obvious in pictures, and frequently in the comfort levels of the wearers, but it is not a difference most people value very highly. Whatever you end up doing will be great, and your wedding party will look awesome because they are awesome.

What about something like this and the groom could add a gray vest.

I like the black tux with the gray vest and tie in your collage. I also like he boutonniere you have above (pretty color combination)!

We are going black tux, white shirt, vest & bowtie for the groom with black tux, vest and bowtie for the groomsmen. I'm bringing some of my girls color in the boutonnieres.

I don't think that first grey is neutral enough for the blue dress.
