Health Insurance

Samantha, on June 26, 2017 at 10:41 AM Posted in Planning 0 39

My fiance and I are getting married June 16, 2018 we both currently attend Grand Valley State University. We both work part time, I'm on my parents health insurance and he is on his. I will be 21 when we get married and he will be 20. How do we go about getting health insurance, or do we just stay on our parents?

You can stay on your parent's insurance until age 26 regardless of if married or not.

Wait until you have jobs with insurance to get married. (sorry, not sorry)

I would suggest asking your current insurance company how that works. Glad you are thinking ahead on it though! It's a biggie to get nailed down.

You do not get kicked off your parents until you are 26, at least as of right now you shouldn't. I'm staying on my moms plan until December when I turn 26 then I'll get insurance through work.

"Generally, you can join a parent’s plan and stay on until you turn 26 even if you:

    Get married

    Have or adopt a child

    Start or leave school

Live in or out of your parent’s home

Aren’t claimed as a tax dependent

Turn down an offer of job-based coverage"

    Per https://www.healthcare.gov/young-adults/children-under-26/

I'm getting married young too so this is nothing against your age, but I'm a firm believer that once you get married you should be able to do all those things on your own. Once FH and I get married, we'll be supporting ourselves completely. With that said, you and your fiancé can stay on your parents plans until you're 26. The day you turn 26 you're no longer eligible and you'll have to figure that out for yourselves.

This website shows places that offer health benefits only working a min of 20+ hours a week, which could be easily made into full time jobs until we get our degrees and start our careers I will be a teacher and he will be working with pollution and hazord waste clean up!

Yeah better cool it on the marriage and age out of your parents coverage. You get dropped when you get married or have a dependent. Eta: i guess you can stay on when you're married. That's news to me.

Some of these age comments make me cringe...

No you can not get kicked off your parents health insurance if you get married, thanks to the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, you can stay on it until you are 26. I would look into insurance through your school or see if your job can offer something. Unfortunately not a lot of jobs offer insurance if you're a part time or PRN employee, but it doesn't hurt to check. How much coverage you need depends on your healthcare needs. Health insurance is so expensive now thanks to this awesome government. My parents have great insurance and I plan to stay on it until I am 26. I'm 21 and went into liver failure at 19, my Hepatologist only takes specific plans and the insurance my work offers is not one of those plans, unfortunately. My FH can also get insurance through his work, but is staying on his mom's as well until he is 26 as it is better insurance than what his job offers. Good for you for trying to be responsible.

Amber, nobody is making age comments. They are saying if you aren't old enough to figure out your insurance situation, you probably shouldn't be getting married.

Samantha, people are pointing out that you aren't self sufficient. That has nothing to do with getting As and Bs.

Samantha - another thing to consider is that although your parents' healthcare plans can continue to cover you and FH for the next 5 and 6 years, respectively, you should each talk to your parents to make sure everyone is on the same page about this. Do both sets of parents intend to continue to provide each of you with coverage after you are married until you turn 26, or do either set of parents have the expectation that you will be a self sufficient couple taking care of your own health insurance once you are married?

But we can be, we will have to be mindful of our expenses . And we know we will struggle with money. Maybe he will get offered a great job with benefits. And I don't pay for my school, only he does. You know if everyone waited until they had enough money for life, like marriage, kids, vacations, cars... Everyone would wait a long time. Because no one just has thousands of dollars laying around to be spent.

And we will be able to find health insurance when we are married, if that means staying on our parents for a little while until we find something better than so be it, my parents have supported me this long and they will never stop supporting me.
