Has anyone changed venues close to their wedding date? Or anything similar?

E.V., on March 14, 2017 at 12:42 AM Posted in Planning 0 16

I'd love to hear about it if you did because the venue I currently have booked is really falling through and was never exactly my favorite place to begin with. It was just fairly inexpensive and close to most of my family. I was also pretty dumb when it came to weddings when I first started so I didn't really know what to look for, what to ask for, and etc. (I've been to two weddings in my life, and both were when I was a child.) Now my FH and I are considering losing our deposit, going with a better venue, and pushing our wedding to Spring or Fall of 2018 instead since everything around here is already booked this year. I'd love to hear about any similar experiences.

    @futuremrscomo No, luckily.

    Editing to add that we were waiting to get our engagement pictures back, which we just did, so now we really need to decide what to do.

    Definitely don't send STDs if you're thinking about moving the date. In what ways are they disappointing you? And how much was the deposit/how much money will you lose?

    Had something similar happen. Our reception venue fell through literally last week. Just secured a new place today and it's much more beautiful than the other. It's outdoor,which I really wanted, and much cheaper. It even has a fountain, which to me gives it kind of a romantic feel.

    @CMC My mistakes: not realizing how expensive it would be to decorate and furnish the place since it comes with nothing, not realizing how limited the photo opportunities will be around there, overestimating the inside of the venue so it will be a tight fit.

    Mistakes by the venue: incredibly poor communication (it has taken the lady up to two months to get back to us on more than one occasion), we were originally told we would be the only wedding there that day but now it turns out there will be one happening in the building right beside us that day at the same time, we were also originally told that we could come decorate the day before and now we are being told if we want to decorate the day before we will have to pay full price to rent the building again. I was also told that I could use the bridal suite in the other building since there isn't anywhere to get ready in mine, but now I can't because of the other wedding.

    The deposit was only 250.

    If you're okay with pushing back your date, I would find another venue.

    @Lucinda Ah, that gives me hope! I'm so glad it has worked out for you! Did you have to move your wedding very far in the future? There aren't many places to get married where I'm at so everything gets booked up incredibly fast.

    If the deposit is only 250, I'd switch. You sound really unhappy with them

    For $250 you should change venues and push the date back.

    @CMC I'm a little sad that I would have to wait longer to get married because I'm ready to roll, but I think changing venues may be for the best. Thanks for talking with me about it!

    250 is not bad to lose as far as the deposit. I would change venues so that you can love it and not settle.

    @Hailey, @kirackle, and @coboundadv I think so too! I'm worried that some of my family won't drive to the venue we are thinking about (it's fifty mins away) but I think I'd rather give the guests that want to come a better venue, give my FH and I a better wedding, and not worry about anything else- especially the venue on the day of. Thank you!

    @MsVanWinkle no thankfully I didn't have to move my date. Just changed reception venues. Our wedding will be in our church and the reception was going to be at the community center in town. Last week I called to make sure date was secured and suddenly it was "oh I'm sorry but that date is booked" after speaking to these people several times before. Thankfully I called about a new venue this afternoon and it was still available so I went right then and paid the deposit.

    @Lucinda So lucky! I can't believe how horrible some of these venues are (lying to us and whatnot!), but I'm really glad you are set now. Hopefully I will be set soon too. Smiley smile
