Hair and Make up advice

CoastalBride, on April 11, 2017 at 1:44 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 19

A little background: I am not a very girly girl. I don't wear make up beyond eye shadow and eye liner and don't style my hair. But I went ahead and booked hair and make up for the wedding. Our wedding is in my sister's backyard so it isn't super formal. It will be pretty warm (Georgia in May. ugh).

Well, I had my trials last night and I really didn't like the hair OR the makeup.

The makeup: I told the artist I just wanted really light makeup (which she did), but I just felt like a clown since I don't normally wear make up. She talked me into trying the airbrush. She said it will hold up better in the heat. I don't know if I should try the regular or just not do the professional makeup??? I don't want to get my pictures back and regret that I look like a clown and not myself, but I also don't want to look like crap. (HA!)

The hair: I really didn't have any inspiration pictures for her so we tried 3 different styles. The last one looked great in the back, (cont'd)

But I hated the front. I think I should schedule another hair trial?? I think it just needs some tweaking but waiting until the actual wedding to figure that out will give me great anxiety.

Thoughts? Thanks for your help. I'm so clueless when it comes to this stuff! Smiley smile

Yes, but I don't want to post them. I am very uncomfortable with how I look with the make up on. But I know outside in the light of day it will look very different than it did in my bathroom.

Maybe try a makeup artist who won't do airbrush so you can compare it. I have never worn airbrush makeup. Or go to a Sephora or Ulta so you can't try different brands.

Please post pics. What you see in the mirror might not be how we see you. We can also give hints and help as to what may need changed.

We can't say oh yeah it's horrible and you should do this or that with out the pics. We can't tell you that it looks stunning and wouldn't change a thing either without the pics

Unfortunately, no amount of encouragement is going to make me like the make up. lol But thank you for offering.

I guess I would be comforted to hear that some people had multiple hair & make up trials?? I guess I just thought it was going to be this one time deal where everything just looked perfect. ha! (Does that ever work??) Unfortunately, in my naivete, I signed a contract with this company before the trial so I'm kind of stuck either way. But I guess we could try again (for another $150). ugh

For the makeup...it sounds like she just generally did not do a good job, provide sound advice, or take your general look into consideration... I would suggest working with another makeup artist to see if you are happier. I too am a Georgia girl and I would highly recommend not going with airbrush for a may wedding---I had for an august wedding that I was in and had airbrush makeup, and it was awful. I felt like an oil spill then it streaked when I got sweaty. I washed my face and did it myself again. However- any good makeup artist can use primers and setting sprays/powders to lock in your look all day regardless of heat.

I used my MUA and hair guys multiple times throughout the planning process (engagement pics, bridals, date night, etc) just so that I could work with them several times so we could really get on the same page with what I liked--I'm super picky, especially with makeup. So really those all count as trials.

keep working at it until you find the right people! I'd hate for you to stress yourself over DIY hair and makeup on your wedding day, if its not something you're accustomed to doing.

Thanks APZ. I was just reading here where some people were saying the airbrush can be oily. I have oily skin + outside heat/humidity so that could be a disaster! Thank you for the input! I guess I will start contacting other people and see if anyone has openings!

Eyeroll. how can we help unless we see? we could suggest things for you to ask her to change, etc. Like you said- you already signed the contract so you're stuck. might as well do something constructive.

I would try going to an ULTA or Sephora store and work with them on makeup. Air brush is way to much for someone that just wants a touch of color.

Hair can be one of the toughest things to decide on. try looking things up on pinterest and take photos to them to see what looks nice on you. I still am not sure if I am doing mine up or down, curly, wavy or straight. to many choices to look at the rest of your life.

I'm not sure where you are in Georgia, but I really really loved my MUA. His business is called faces by seven. I also know a handful of other great makeup artists based in Atlanta area if you are anywhere close.

    good luck!

I don't wear makeup at all either. I ended up going with Ulta because I was able to go through and try different products until I found foundation that didn't feel too heavy and wouldn't cause any skin problems for me (I have severe eczema so that was a huge concern) and the MUA really took the time to listen and get a feel for what I want and understands that I don't wear makeup. If you're uncomfortable posting the pictures here, maybe you could ask a close friend what they think? But I would suggest telling your MUA that airbrush is not what you want and seeing if you can arrange for another trial.

I encourage you to post pics. I did last week even though I was super uncomfortable and got excellent feedback. It allowed me to go back to my MUA with detailed requests and suggestions. Like you, I know nothing about makeup. But it's hard for people to offer suggestions without seeing.

If you get your foundation airbrushed it can be a lot lighter on your face vs conventional application. Be open to the idea at least. I hate hate hate strip lashes personally. I think they make everyone look like they are getting ready for dance competition or drag show.

I had airbrush makeup for a wedding I was a bridesmaid in in August. I hated it and it felt so thick and gross. When I got mine done for my wedding I had her use regular makeup and it felt so much better. I do wear makeup daily though, but not heavy.
