Geek Brides: Need your opinion on invitation

Sci Fi Bride, on February 1, 2016 at 10:32 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 26

We are in a hotly contested debate over how to word our invitations, which were supposed to be at the printers 2 weeks ago. We are doing a comic con themed wedding, and our invitations are Lord of the Rings, with the invitation itself being the Gates of Moria, the RSVP card decorated with an evenstar, and the envelope a gorgeous blue and silver elven map.

I want them to read: Somewhere in the Universe, in a galaxy far, far, away, through all space and time, the journey begins. You are invited to share the celebration of...etc etc etc.

He wants strictly Tolkien, with "All that is gold does not glitter,

Not all those who wander are lost;

The old that is strong does not wither,

Deep roots are not reached by the frost."

Then I suggested the simple line from Farscape, "From the first moment I laid eyes on you, I could never see the end." You are invited to celebrate the love of blah blah blah on June 26, 2016, etc etc etc. "Always."

So, thoughts anyone?

If the invitations are the Gates of Moria and everything is from the Tolkienverse I'd keep it with that theme. The whole intergalactic thing doesn't mesh with Middle Earth IMO. But the poem he wants doesn't really sound like an invitation to anything haha.

Personally I'm a huge Tolkien fan (we're also doing LOtR invitations!) But I think the Farscape line is more fitting to a wedding invitation.

Since you're going with LOTR theme, I'd stick with What your fiancé suggested. Personally, I love that and think it would tie into everything else. I do like the line from Farscape too. Either way, your invites sound beautiful-very creative! Please post a pic when they're done.

What if you leave off the poem and just have typical invitation wording but in a Tolkien-esque font? Are you doing Save the Dates (even if they're digital)? Perhaps those could be a different fandom and the invitations could be Tolkien.

I personally think the Farscape line is more "wedding"y. It also comes down to what theme you want to come across. If you use purely Tolkien invitations and wording, then it may look like you're doing just a LOtR wedding, not a comic con one like you mentioned. So mashing some fandoms together might be a simpler way to have that theme come across.

Putting star wars onto a Tolkien card would offend my nerdness. I'm with him. Stay Tolkien.

I agree that it seems weird to have the entire invitation package being LOTR themed, but then have one random quote that is Star Wars. Like maybe fantasy-fantasy is ok, but fantasy-SciFi is somehow jarring?

That being said, you want it to be comic con themed, so maybe you do want to bring in more sources so it doesn't just seem LOTR themed. But in that case, I would pick just 1-2 elements for LOTR theme and then work in a couple elements each of 2-3 other sources.

Also FYI I was just looking at the USPS stamps, and there are Batman stamps and Harry Potter stamps right now.

ETA if you're going with the Tolkein quote, I'd stick to the last two lines, which seem more relevant to marriage/long-lasting, strong love.

"The old that is strong does not wither,

Deep roots are not reached by the frost."

I can see his point on wanting it to be strictly LOTR because the invitations are clearly LOTR themed, but if the wedding is not LOTR themed specifically, then it wouldn't make sense to send out only LOTR themed things, so I see your point as well.

In order to keep the comic con theme i personally would use your first idea, because it brings a bunch of different themes together. I would worry though that it might be a bit confusing for your guests, but hey, you know your crowd better than I do!

From your invitation/RSVP card/envelope along, I would not be expecting anything but a LOTR wedding, if it hasnt gone to the printer yet, any chance of mixing in a few different styles instead of keeping ti so LOTR heavy? Maybe the envelope is Tardis blue, and the RSVP card has the Star Trek comm outline or the Enterprise?

Other than that I would go for smaller touches from each fandom, keep it classy and not over the top.

Part of me says keep LOTR wording since its LOTR art. Part of me says if you have a comic-con theme, LOTR STDs, and LOTR invites, people may think your theme is LOTR, and comic-con may get lost in the mix.

That's just it, I don't think the poem is very 'wedding-esque'. And I know fandoms 'touching' can be problematic for some purists. Which is why I suggested the 3rd alternative...those in the 'know' will get it, otherwise it just kind of fits if you don't.

BTW, the boat already sailed on the STDs. Also LotR, lol. Although we didn't plan it that way, those were just the ones I fell in love with.

    I'm also open to suggestions.

Yes, the 2 fandoms touching gives me a weird vibe. I get it though because FH and I have been debating LOTR vs Star Wars since we met!

I like the third option but I don't know farscape so I wouldn't notice and I'd think it's just a very nice phrasing.

ETA: I don't see anything wrong with going all LOTR for invites and STD if you communicate the comic con theme in some other way and / or it's clear in your wedding decor.

I'm not seeing how you can fit an entire poem on your invites either way. But yeah I would stick to Tolkien.

I also wouldn't mix the Tolkien look with Star Wars wording. What about something like "I would rather share one lifetime with you than face all the ages of this world alone" on the front and inside a standard "You are invited to celebrate the love of all ages on xx.xx.xxxx at blah blah" etc.

Ok, discussed it with the FH last night, we're going with Arwen's quote across the board. It's my favorite quote anyway and his mother loves it. I'll save the mash ups for our programs.

I am glad you are sticking with the Tolkien theme, his writing is very eloquent too so I think it fits a wedding invite! Smiley smile
