Flying with your wedding dress?

Tara, on February 26, 2011 at 3:46 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 3

You pay a fortune for your favorite, most important dress ever, then you want to fly to Hawaii with it for the wedding. Do you carry it on and ask them to stow it in the "Captain's Closest", or do you need to tell the airline ahead of time you're flying with a wedding dress? Then when you're there, do you need to find a bridal shop to steam out the dress or something from been traveling in a garment bag??

Yeah, my wedding is morphing for like the 4th, and I believe final, time. YAY looks like I'll get what I wanted most initially! Smiley laugh Smiley laugh

Well the obvious number 1 is, never ever ever, I don't care what the airline says DO NOT let them check it. It goes on the plane with you, even if it needs to lie in the aisle during takeoff and landing and in your lap the rest of the flight.

You should be able to call the airline and find out if your plane with have a first/business class suit check on the plane. That's the best place to hang it out of the way and you can get it as you leave the airplane. So many people are flying with suits for business meetings or fancy dresses for special occasions nowadays, that they should have some way to accommodate you already in place.

I do recommend taking it out and letting it hang high up for a night and see if any wrinkles or anything occurred during travel in the morning. That way, if you need to take it in to a Dry Cleaners, you can tell them exactly where the trouble spots are after it has been hanging all night. Most Dry Cleaners should be able to steam/clean wedding dresses.

I carried my dress from Western Australia to Hawaii. I gave it to the flight attendant on 3 plane each way and they hung it in the front closet. No problem. They also were exited for me and delighted to have a bride on board. We were given champagne with dinner even though we were traveling coach. When we arrived I hung it in a steamy bathroom and the wrinkles fell out. I could have taken it to be steamed but did not need to. They would have done it at the hotel for me.
