fh experiencing anxiety

Stephanie, on February 13, 2018 at 9:54 AM Posted in Family and Relationships 0 7
Our wedding is just a few days away and FH is telling me that he's feeling really anxious. He says he has a headache and just feels like he's going to explode. I've never dealt with this so I really don't know how to help. I'm hoping you all might have some tips on what he can do to relieve some of these feelings. Anything will help! Thanks in advance.

Just be there for him.... let him talk about it. Focus not on the wedding itself, but how great it will be to be married!

Go do something with him for fun, non wedding related. Get his mind off things. Both of you should take some time to relax

Does he experience anxiety at other stressful times in his life? It may be he doesn't have an arsenal of coping strategies at his disposal. My DH is that way, he is rarely anxious, but when he is is gets really overwhelmed - whereas I'm always anxious but as a result I'm well versed in handling myself when I get that way. I'd normally suggest things like meditation or mindfulness, but with only a few days to go, practicing new skills (assuming those are new skills for him) probably won't yield any great results. So instead I'd recommend burning off the stress. Exercise, run a bunch of errands, do some DIY, hike, jog, go to the gym, whatever thing that is fun for him that will distract him and use up the extra adrenaline he's coping with. If his headaches are tension headaches then working out may help him relax his muscles a bit too and give him a little relief.

My FH suffers from anxiety as well, to keep him from freaking out, I distract him with non-wedding related stuff. We go for a walk, we cook together, we pray (we're religious) and that seems to help. He's also a person that loves physical contact, so as silly as it may seem I hug him and give him simple back rubs. I also rub his temples because just like your FH, he also gets headaches when he's having a panic attack. My last advice is just to be as patient and loving as you can be, I've noticed when I'm calm, he's calm.

    Sex.

No, seriously though..when he's feeling anxious, just distract him. Talk about your honeymoon, go have dinner out and make a rule to not talk wedding. Have a movie night in, cuddle up and eat pizza. Go have a shower together. Tell him how excited you are to see him all dressed up, waiting for you at the end of the aisle.

Sex may help? Give him a nice massage, just cuddle, go for a walk. Is it just the wedding day that has him anxious? Being in the spotlight and all the attention? Keep him focused on the light at the end of the tunnel. You are so close, just need to get through a few more days.

I'm super anxious at the best of times too. i found that it got a bit exacerbated by the planning process and as we got closer i was feeling so freaked out about being responsible for the 175 guests we were hosting, being centre of attention, etc. as PPs have said, distractions, physical touch, etc can be really helpful. i also found it helpful to have the wedding weekend really well planned out, knowing when i'd get to have time with H and when we'd have tasks to do separately. i also asked my friends to check in with me to make sure i was doing ok during the high-intensity times. plan for some down time during your wedding day if you can, and even if you're not honeymooning right away make sure you build in some recovery time.
