Dress Dilemma Continues..

Emly, on March 20, 2019 at 1:48 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 8

Hi all,
So this past weekend I had made a post about my dress and feeling uncertain due to comments my family made about it. Well yesterday my dress came in and I put it back on and I do like it but I think I might have an issue. So my wonderful mother felt it necessary to bless me with a bottom half that's significantly larger than my top half Haha.

My problem is this, my hips and butt area are roughly a size 8 and my bust and waist area is more of a 2/4. The dress I ordered is a size 6 and when I have it on it fits pretty good up top, a little loose but doable. The bottom however is really tight and creates a buckling effect at my waist. It does feel comfortable all over so if I do loose some weight there's a potential for it to fit less tight, but I don't want to plan on that.
Has anyone else had this experience? How did you fix it? Can an alterations let out only the butt/hips area and not the top? Would a belt help to hide it if I decide not to have it let out?

I would talk with the store and your seamstress. Maybe it makes sense to buy a size up and get the dress taken in the top so it fits perfectly?

Not with wedding dresses but I've had this issue in other dresses. I'm a size 6 bottom and a size 2/4 top. I've had dresses ride up for this reason and that may be what yours is doing. I don't know how anyone would go about fixing it. I would talk to a seamstress but you have a lot of time so I wouldn't try to get it altered just yet.

Since you have plenty of time, I'd see if I can return it for a larger size then have a seamstress take the top in when you do alterations closer to your wedding.

Hmm, they should have ordered you the size the fits the biggest part of your body (and then altered the rest) Is it possible to exchange for a bigger size? Have you spoken to a seamstress? They are the best people to ask for advice as to what can be done for your particular gown.

I would see if you could return and get the size that fits your hips best, then alter the rest from there.

Absolutely they can let out the hip area. There is generally about a half inch to an inch of give on each side of the dress. At the same time, they could even take in the top a little bit so that it fits snugly against you. By letting out the hip it will get ride of the puckering I am seeing in the waist as well. It also appears that it may have some boning in the bodice which may be a bit too long for you. This could add to the puckering. If returning/exchanging isn't a possibility, look into getting it let out a bit. But, you have lots of time so you may want to wait until you are about 6 months out in the case your body fluctuates. The last thing you want is to make alterations now only to have to do more in over a year.

I had a problem getting dresses over my hips when I was trying on dresses so they ordered me a size bigger. I will just have to have the top of my wedding dress taken in but the bottom fits like a glove and I can actually move in it. I would try to order it in a bigger size!

I have the same exact problem. My upper half is a 10 and my hips and bottom r a 14. I ordered my dress to fit my hips. The 14 came in and yes its at least 2 sizes to big up top but fits perfect in my hips. Much easier to take in up top then to let out in the hips.
