designing own ceremony question! opinions?

Good morning everyone!

Our officiant is a very close friend who got ordained and is marrying us. We are designing our own personal ceremony - writing our own vows, etc... I have been starting to research and put this thing together. It's going to be a quick 20 minute ceremony..

My question to you - how early do you think i should meet with him to start going over this thing and putting it together? I have 9 months - but I want him to feel comfortable and ready - I also don't want to overkill it. At the same time, the ceremony is what marries us - it's the most important part of the day in my eyes. The answers i have gotten so far vary 1 year ahead to 1 month...

It's not a question of whether or not he should do our ceremony - he is. I just would love some opinions - or advice from anyone who designed their own ceremony!

We just locked down the ceremony location - contract will be done by friday of this week, so i have wedding brain!

Since he's never officiated a wedding before, give him 2-3 months to work on it. If he backs out, you'll still (maybe) have time to book a pro.

I usually e-mail my couples a ceremony draft about a month before the wedding, but -- I've officiated over 1,400 ceremonies so I don't need as much lead time as a newbie.

As an officiant, I can say that 6 weeks is enough time for me to write the ceremony and rehearse. Of course, this is my job so your friend might want more time. Have you asked what they are comfortable with?

Our officiant is also a close friend, but we wrote our own ceremony script back in June and then handed it over to our friend to tweak. If you just google "ceremony script" there's lots of great drafts and examples out there. I found some great variations on Offbeat Bride, wedding bee, and The Knot.
