Confirmation of a oot guest coming...kids. Again.

Stephanie, on May 30, 2018 at 2:38 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 25

So a guest I really wanted to come is coming to the wedding! YAY! We are having an adults only event but she is way OOT and has a wedding the day before in DE, and mine in PA the next day. Her 8 month old is most LIKELY coming with her, she was super cool about not having her there, just not sure how the logistics would work out yet. To me it's fine if she brings her 8 month old after coming to terms with this. I am thrilled she and her husband are coming. But my mother is upset that she can bring her baby who is still breastfeeding but her brother, my uncle whose kids I did not invite and live in FL, are not invited. His children are 8 and 3. She said she thinks he would be upset if he saw her with her baby, and his kids weren't welcome. Should he be upset ? My mother thinks, he will be. I of course want him there, but I understand if he can't make it, I think his attendance means more to my mom than to me . Do you think he would understand or be upset?

He should understand. Babies that are still breastfeeding are usually the exception to the no kids rule

My H's cousin asked if they could bring their baby to our wedding as their child care fell through (although I don't really believe they had it in the first place). We said no because I have cousins that have little ones and I just couldn't play favorites. None of them ended up coming and that was fine by us.

Your mom is right, you are probably going to piss off uncle. That being said, that's your right, especially with a breastfeeding baby. Just gotta weigh what the drama is worth to you.

3 and 8 is way different than a 8 month old. He should understand. But if not who cares. It’s you day. People can be upset about everything and anything but your happiness is the only one that matters.

Breastfeeding babies are an exception to the rule. Your Uncle will have to get over it.

    Hi Stephanie,

You are very right that you mom may be amping up you Uncle's feelings on your behalf. Your Uncle, who has children, will surely remember what it was like to have an 8 month old and understand that your friend and her husband traveling to weddings with said 8 month old is hard enough without trying to organize childcare. You are making the right choice.

My SIL always makes comments when people don't allow her kids but allow other family children in events - so far all situations where similar to yours: infants versus toddlers.

So even if he gets upset, I think it is completely understandable how her situation is different than his. I, as a parent, wouldn't mind.

I think infants are different than younger children, since it's harder to leave that at home especially when mom & dad are traveling. Why can't her brother get a babysitter?

Correct. Babies who are breastfeeding get a "wedding pass" to be there. This rule is fair. I wouldn't go back and invite your uncle and his kids because then it's no longer a fair rule to everyone if you play favorites.

As a parent I don't understand why people get so upset about no kids for one night. I never wanted to take my son to any events let alone a wedding. The only wedding I ever took him to was a family member and all kids were invited.

    Me too on this^^^^!

Big difference between a nursing 8 month old and an 8 yr old and 3 yr old. BIG.

An 8 yr old will be bored, a three year old will be even more bored.

Bored or running around like the little balls of energy that they are!

an 8 year old will be in mom's arms or a carseat all night. Don't invite your uncle's kids. You would open up a wormhole of other jealous parents or having to invite even more kids. If he's not find with the 8 month old that's his problem. He's never breast fed. He doesn't know what that's like.

In my opinion your uncle should understand the needs of an infant. Also, speaking from experience, we were asked to not bring our baby and our cousin's kids still came to the wedding (even though our little ones were a month apart). We were able to enjoy ourselves as opposed to our cousins who had to sit majority of the reception or make sure their eldest wasn't breaking anything.

Let's be clear, we don't know if the uncle will be upset. OP's mother is just saying that.

In my opinion, if the wedding is adult only, there should be no exceptions. It's up to the couple or person with the baby to decide if they can attend without their child. If they can't, that's totally understandable.

THIS!!! There is really no comparing a 8 month old breast feeding child to a 3 or 8 year old!

I disagree with WW's "breastfeeding rule", as I had several new mothers at our wedding, including a bridesmaid, that never even asked if they could bring their babies and were more than happy to be away from them for a couple days. Personally, I think this is one of those things that someone on WW just made up one day.

That said, I don't know that your uncle will notice ONE 8-month old baby at your reception. Just put a lot of distance between their tables. If uncle says anything, just tell him it was super last minute that their childcare fell through, and they had already traveled here for the wedding, there was nothing you could do.

Hm, I am dealing with a similar situation, kind of. I just found out that not one, but two of my wedding guests are pregnant! Yay! It’s so exciting for them. My wedding is next April so they will have both given birth by then. I am wondering how to go about this because the my wedding venue is a bar. It’s not appropriate for young children to be there. We were planning on a child free wedding besides my 13-year-old brother and FH’s two teen stepbrothers. I’m afraid if I give my two guests a pass on their babies, my sister, who has two young children, will get pissed!

It is generally accepted that breastfeeding babies get a pass. If your uncle does complain, tell him that if he indeed is still breastfeeding the 8 and 3 year olds, they are welcome to attend.

I agree with the previous poster who said it’s up to you how much drama you’re willing to endure. I don’t think you should cave and invite your uncle’s kids but that’s up to you. Is your mom paying for the wedding?

I’m curious about this breastfeeding rule...if an 8 month old who is breastfeeding is welcome due to this “rule” does that mean that a 3 month old on formula is not allowed?
