Choosing a Birth Control Method

Faith, on June 20, 2018 at 12:05 PM Posted in Fitness and Health 0 27
Hey everyone! I’m saving myself for marriage, so I have never used any form of birth control before. My wedding is in about 8 months, and I feel like this is something that I needed to figure out in advance! It sounds like condoms would end up being expensive, and we’re both college students, so we’re looking for the most budget friendly options. Does anyone have any advice for me?

My advice would be to speak to your doctor. Everyone responds differently to different forms of birth control so the person who knows your medical history would be best suited to answer this question.

Do you have health insurance? It was made a requirement that women's birth control be covered at 100% if you have it. I was on the pill (got pregnant- YAY ME!), got the IUD (was awful), and now have the implant in my arm. I have no qualms about the implant but like the PP said, talk to your doctor about the different options you have.

Agree with Sarah. Please consult a doctor. Just because something works for someone on this forum does not mean that it's appropriate for you.

Agree with Sarah. Also, no form of birth control is 100%. Personally, I can name multiple friends that got pregnant using different forms of birth control. If children are not something you are interested in now (or ever), you may want to look into using condoms as well as using the pill (or some other form of hormonal birth control, talk to your doctor about what is right for you). Condoms may seem expensive, but they are far cheaper than a baby.

Agreed, Doctor is the best person to talk to. However, I will say, I just went and got the 5 year IUD and I love it. My situation it slightly different, we have 3 kids (two of which are 4 month old twins), so we needed something that was going to stop those suckers at all cost! Lol 😂.

but anyways, the IUD is inserted by your doctor, and lasts up to 5 years, no strings attached! And if you decide in 2-3 years you want to try for a baby, then the doctor just takes it out! It’s easy and you don’t have to worry about it at all. It would be worth asking your doctor about and seeing if it’s a good option for you! Smiley smile

My body rejects birth control so I can't even take it!! Definitely see your doctor and see what works for you, and if your unsure on how your body is responding call back and if you have to keep switching before finding one that works (or does not work) do so

I have an IUD, Mirena specifically, it's quick to be inserted and lasts 5years. I had issues with the pill and the shot, but that's due to having stage 4 endometriosis that affects my hormones. Talk to your obgyn about what fits your schedule and lifestyle

Research what will work for you, but I currently have a nexplanon implant in my arm and statistically it's more reliable than getting a tubal done. You keep it in for 3 years at a time. Some women experience breakthrough bleeding but I have only had two cycles in the last year, and one bit of spotting. I have no concerns whatsoever of getting pregnant. This is my second time with this brand, third time having implant, and I was about to get pregnant within two cycles are having it removed the first time.

Whatever you do, STAY AWAY FROM DEPO. You can read thousands of horror stories of others who have had problems and it really should be taken off the market. I took one dose of it (shot) and was sterile for two years. I also gained 40 pounds within 6 months

I also agree you should speak with your doctor. For the pill, I know that a lot of things you might be used to will cut off their effect (antibiotics, alcohol, etc). So you need to discuss your lifestyle with your doctor and see what you have available for you.
I personally love the pill and cannot live without it. But then again, my lifestyle works with it.

I'd highly recommend looking into an IUD. Not everyone has the same experience but it was life-changing for me. I'm currently on my second one and haven't had a period in almost six years and never have to think about taking a pill. I also do not worry at all about being pregnant because it's so effective.

Like others have said, talk to your doctor. I only push for the IUD because a lot of doctors are still wary of them for bad reasons. Also, do not rely on condoms (unless you need them for STD purposes). They are not very effective and honestly, most people give up on them after some time because they're a hassle.

Definitely talk to your doctor and consider finding a Gynecologist in your area.

I take the pill because I didn't want to use an implant or anything inserted vaginally and have months worth of hormones put into my body at one time.

I was on a pill that released the hormones equally throughout the month and that worked best for my body. I also tried a pill where each day the hormone levels were different and that gave me extreme nausea and I was sick often.

I'm good at remembering to take the pill and its just worked the best for me and my body, and knowing I can stop taking it whenever I want to makes me comfortable.

Like everyone has already said, talk to your doctor. I am on the pill and I pay nothing to get them every month. The only thing that I pay for is my co-pay for going in for a visit!

Even though I am on birth control FH and I still use condoms. We do not want to risk anything before we are married. They are on the pricey side, but how I see it is much cheaper to buy condoms then raise a child for at least the next 18 years!

I've been on depo for 10 years. No periods. Never gained any weight. Never had any side effects. But it cant affect your fertility for up to 1+ after, any good doctor advises you of that before letting you start..

Go talk to a doctor and see what they recommend. If you have insurance, birth control is 100% covered.

Okay so.. i also decided to wait until our wedding day, and i was given this advice to ill give it to you. Since you have never been on BC you need to schedule a OBGYN appointment like today. Let them know you would like to come in for your yearly (if your over 21 you should be going every year regardless if you have been sexually active) then they will check you out make sure nothing is going on and such, as doctors do. Then just let her/him know that you are going to be getting married and having sex and would like to start bc now.. the reason i say do it now.. not ever BC will work for you. It may take a few months to find one that works with your hormones and body. So get on it now so by the time your wedding comes around your on a really good routine and know you have one that works great for YOU!

    Hope this helps! Good luck!

Please talk to your doctor first, especially if you have no experience with birth control. Birth control works differently for everyone, and they will be best equipped to find something that works best for YOU.

Also, condoms may be expensive, but so is being pregnant or getting an STD. I would recommend you both get tested, and invest in condoms as a back up method... just in case! Smiley smile good luck!

I am in the same situation as you... But OLDER!!! If you have health insurance get an IUD or the Implant. Both are 99% effective and are covered.
