Can I throw my own bridal shower?

**Soon to be bride**, on February 16, 2011 at 8:08 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 48

OK...so my situation is different than most.

We are getting married on a cruise so we cant get gifts on the boat. Also FH & I already have everything we need for a home so we are not registering.

We thought that perhaps we could still have a bridal shower but instead of people bringing gifts we could create a list of things we want to do on our honeymoon like:

Bottle of wine= $40....

    Parasailing for two= $40

    Snorkeling for two=$60

    etc...

So we will have that list on a table along with blank cards and envelopes & pens.

People can choose which gift they would like to give and write it down on the envelope along with a message for us along with the check or money...and then put it in a large bird cage wedding thing...lol

Then they would cross off that item so that way people can choose other things.

My second idea is to throw the shower myself...We are not having a bridal party..no MOH so, I dont think anyone is throwing me one. So would it be ok to "help" my mom throw me one at our home? What are your ideas about both?

    Thank you!

So...like a cash shower? Personally, I would find that very tacky. I think the guests would feel uncomfortable about you opening gifts of money in front of others as well.

You could have a bridal luncheon, a recipe shower, etc in lieu of a shower with gifts. There is no reason why it would need to be on the boat. Hold it at someone's home, a month or so before the wedding.

Why don't you sign up for a honeymoon registry instead?

    OHHH...one last part...

My best friend lives in another state so she cant throw me a bachelorette party...is it ok to do this myself as well?

I was thinking perhaps we could have 2 parts:

    1) the bridal shower in the early evening with dinner at my home (more formal)

    2) After the shower hire a lady that throws secret parties (Sex parties) and then bring out the drinks (more fun and crazy) and have that as the bachelorette party. Not into strippers or clubs.

I could tell everyone what's going on that way if they are unconfortable with the sexy party they can leave after that....

PLEASE give me your ideas about all!

    Thank you!

Now that I have seen the rest of your posts....

Put the birdcage out at the wedding. NO list of prices! Let people give the gifts they wish, and put them in the cage. That is the norm at weddings anyhow. Since you aren't registered, it will be assumed that you prefer cash anyhow.

We are only inviting 20 people to wedding...thats all that the package includes...immediate family members...we are having a bbq after wedding for everyone who cant come...everyone understands and is ok with that.

SO, another thing is...can i invite the people who are not coming to the wedding to the bridal shower/bachelorette party?

What about other girls in the bridal party plan your bachelorette? Maybe make a request to them to plan one for you.

I think a Honey Fund/ Honeymoon registry would be a much better idea. Honestly, if I went to a party where I was asked to write a check like that, I would be horrified.

@ Stacy- a lot of the people dont use internet---so figured this might be a better way to do it...and its discret...they dont have to put their names on the envelopes...or even give cash...

"SO, another thing is...can i invite the people who are not coming to the wedding to the bridal shower/bachelorette party?"

ONLY if it is with the understanding that they will not be attending the wedding! Typically, it is ONLY wedding guests.

If we did the envelope thing...it would be after the party...not in front of everyone!

I think its perfectly okay to throw your own bachelorette party! Just get together with your closest friends and plan something! and if you want to do it like that (dinner, and then a sex toy party) do it!

as far as the shower goes, sure it's ok to help your mom throw a shower, but i wouldn't put a 'price list' out! that is a bit tacky!

Seriously, go with the Honeyfund. Even my 90 year old grandfather figured it out.

Soon to be Bride, you are asking people to come to a wedding shower hosted by you, write a check for a gift, and not get invited to the wedding? That is simply rude, on one level I wonder if you are joking.

Is the sexy party a sales pitch for the guests, if so, I do not know what to say, but I am seriously hoping you are joking.

I know the honey moon thing is wonderful...but I really don't feel my family will do that. Also, I just know the basics of the internet so I dont know where to go to do a honeymoon site...

    is it free?

    hard to do?

    What is a reputable site?

You don't put anything. If they choose to bring a gift, great. If not, great. You cannot ask for a gift on your own invite, especially cash.

And really, really reconsider the bird cage. I think if you read the posts here, that is unanimous.
