Best responses for non-guests who invite themselves?

MrsHanlon, on March 26, 2018 at 1:31 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 11
So, I know there's a thousand and one posts about drama brides and grooms have had with awkward encounters, phone calls, texts, snapchats from people asking for an invite to their wedding, what are some of the scripts/phrases/mantras you've used if you've been in this sticky situation?

It's just a tiring experience, I currently have a friend who got engaged weeks after I did and I congratulated her at the time, but we haven't seen each other in three years and she pretty regularly asks when she should look for her invite in the mail? One of our groomsmen has a gf who is not in the BP and she asked right when we got engaged that she be invited to all wedding related events so that her bf would not be socializing with my bridesmaids. My MIL regularly asks that friends of hers be added to the already set guest list on a monthly basis. These conversations come up far too often and I don't know how people cope with a smile on their face.

What sort of events would your groomsmen be invited to where he could "socialize" with the bridesmaids? Pretty much any pre wedding event where the groomsmen would be with the bridesmaids would require significant others to be invited (couple's shower, rehearsal dinner, etc.).

For other people who keep asking about their invite, just be honest. "Thank you so much for your support. Unfortunately we have a limited guest list and were not able to invite everyone that we would like to."

Let's be honest...we don't do it with a smile on our face jot really. I got to a point once that I shouted, I invited 1aunt who I like and she mentioned something about it to my other aunt's who I dislike. I had to put my foot down I couldn't afford any extra people and had to tell them the guest list is final and nothing could be done about adding more people.

To guests who invite themselves or ask when they’ll see their wedding invite, “I’m so sorry, we haven’t finalized our guest list yet.” As you get closer to the date, “I’m so sorry, unfortunately our budget only allowed us to invite a certain number of people, I do hope you understand.”

To the groomsmans girlfriend, if you’re not close with her, you don’t owe her an explanation for not inviting her to your shower or bachelorette. I would just assure her that he won’t be at the events your bridesmaids are at. If you plan on regularly hosting hangouts for your bridal party only to socialize and you exclude significant others, that’s rude because there’s no reason to host multiple wedding party meet ups.

If your MIL isn’t paying, tell her the same thing as the first paragraph. If she is paying, unfortunately her adding guests to the guest list comes hand in hand with her footing the bill.

Exactly, she'd already BE present at all of the big events so I was very confused by her request, I think I was more so put off by her tone. Thanks for the advice!

I just have to get used to the script, that's a good rule of thumb to follow, I just hate hurting anyone's feelings.

In the case of the gf, she was already on the guest list for wedding events, I just didn't understand her tone or reasoning for calling me to address it, all SO's were given an invite to all events.

MIL isn't paying and she's all around a very sweet woman so I'll have to find a nice way to address the guest list with her again.

When people invite themselves I use “FW has such a large family that we cannot accommodate everyone we want, sorry!” It is true and it doesn’t bring up budget or anything to specific.

Yeah, agreed that is confusing! Also immature that she doesn't trust her bf to be around other women....

I like that! Idk I've never thought of myself as a pushover but I find that situations like this back me into a corner and I tend to overshare and explain myself out of anxiety.

We have only sent our save the dates, but have already received some questions. We just simply said that we had to eliminate some from our guest list that we would have liked to include in order to stick to our budget.

Thank God it isn't just me, I feel like my face absolutely gives me away when I find someone rude for asking.

When people ask I simply say that we are keeping our wedding very small and intimate so our guest list is small and set in stone.
