Any military brides/ long distance brides that moved right after their wedding??

Eri, on April 19, 2018 at 6:14 PM Posted in Planning 0 10

Hi everyone!

My FH and I are long distance and will be all the way up to our wedding. Because of that, I have already started looking into how to obtain the marriage certificate by myself, and all of the things that we will have to do right after the wedding to legalize it. He's stationed in Southern California and we are having our wedding in Michigan (where I live now and where both of our families are). I was planning on moving there right after the wedding. I read that we will have to pick up our official marriage certificate a few weeks after it's sent in and then I have to change my name and everything. I'm just not sure how that's going to work with the move. Do any of you have experience with this?

Can’t you get it mailed to California?

That's what I wasn't sure about! Is it an option to have them mail it?

I’m going through similar struggles! We’re getting married in Indiana where we both currently live. 6 days after the wedding FH has to report for duty in Rhode Island! And I won’t see him for 5 weeks! I have no idea how I’m going to get our official marriage license, change my name, get my spouse military ID, and move across the country in 6 days!

I’m sure they can mail it because think about all the people that have destination weddings, they have to get theirs too.

Yeah! Those are all things I'm worried about, too! My FH is going to talk to his SI about the military side of it, I just need to get the Michigan side worked out. I'm sure it's been done before, but I don't want to miss anything or make it more complicated than it needs to be.

OK, I am in Michigan, a retired veteran, and was just at the ID office earlier today. I sent a message to the Pastor who married DH and I and here is what he said:

"For every wedding I have performed, the license has either 2 or 3 copies, depending on the county issuing it. One copy goes to the couple after the wedding, the other one or two to the county. So... the couple (I asked for you OP) should have their copy immediately."

If you wanted to, you guys could get your ID card and get you enrolled in DEERS here in Michigan at one of several ID issuing facilities. Don't know if you are going on a honeymoon right away or what, but if you will be here for a few days, you could knock that out right here in Michigan.

Let me know if you need contact information for the ID offices. Hope this helps

Thanks you! That does help. We’ll talk to our priest to double check we can also do several copies! There is a naval base 3 hours away from us so maybe we can go on the Monday after and get my ID!
