Have you guys discussed actual colors? What colors are each of you thinking of? And what does he want the feeling or mood to be when he says dark? Does he mean romantic? Gothic? Answering questions like this will help you guys decide. And what season are u getting married in? Some dark colors that I think are nice are burgundy, plum, or navy. Pair any of these with a neutral color and it should be a nice compromise. Gold, champagne, and/or ivory would be nice. Silver would work too but I’m partial to colors in the ivory/champagne family.

I feel like once you have your venue, you will have a better idea of what will work best with that space. I wouldn't put black flowers out in a bright ballroom ya know?

Some ideas of decoration that go along with a "dark" theme can include black metals, rich purple florals with greens, big candle sticks, tree branches, draped fabrics, skeleton keys. Lighting will probably be key at your wedding!

When I told my mother that I want Black to be one of my main colors she really couldn’t see my vision. I’d ask him to send you pictures of what he thinks is “dark” enough and you guys can find middle ground from there. Maybe go on Pinterest together and add him to your wedding vision board and you guys can find a happy medium. I’d stick to colors like burgundy, navy and dark greens to achieve the look. You can totally pull off a dark nature theme. You can use dark leafy greens for your bouquets and have the men in dark suits and shirts. I’d also have low lighting and use lots and lots of candles.
