Disabled Father

Emma, on April 13, 2018 at 9:30 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 8
Hi all,
My father has been disabled his whole life ( his legs do not work)and is unable to walk without crutches or a wheel chair. My question is how to handle this when it comes to walking down the isle with and the father/daughter dance. It is very important to me that we do both. Thanks!

Hi Emily! Someone asked a similar question earlier, so I had just saved these pictures from Pinterest. As long as there aren't any accessibility issues with your venue, you can be escorted down the aisle just like any bride would be, he'll just be using a wheelchair instead of walking. Is there someone who could push his chair if needed while you walk beside him holding his hand?

You can also still plan a father-daughter dance. Here's the video of one of the brides above dancing with her father:

Do you have another special person that could help push the wheelchair down the aisle while you walk beside him holding hands?

If he would prefer to use the wheelchair, you simple walk next to it. As for the first dance, it's possible to dance with a person in a wheelchair. Look at youtube videos. Here are two examples:

For the walk down the aisle, could you have your mom or Sister to push the wheelchair? Or for him to use a motorized wheelchair if available?

For the first dance, is he able to stand at all (perhaps in place)? If not, you could sit him in a chair and do a special unique dance and not the formal slow dance. Make it a fun dance and move around him while you guys do synchronized moves. Lots of hand moves and facial expressions! (I’ll try to find a video)

Okay, so you definitely have to be open minded to see this vision.

So, you’re standing, he is sitting. You both do a choreographed dance. At times, be beside him. Sometimes stand behind him. Etc. but the point is make it something unique and personal rather than trying to the standard ballroom dance. You could even use props if you’d like!
