Direction for groom's wear

D&G114, on August 24, 2017 at 12:19 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 19

Despite having a really good sense about my and my bridesmaids' attire, I am totally lost about what works for FH and GM, and he struggles even more.

Bridesmaids are in burgundy. Flowers are burgundy, pink and gold. He prefers a black tuxedo, as do I. Where we are lost is with the vest and tie. He wants color. Will burgundy be too prom like? Grey will bring in a color that is not anywhere else. A co-worker said that FH should have white vest. It's all confusing me. We are older and I want a classic look but stylish look. Can anyone give direction and/or post pics for idea?

My BM are in burgundy. GM in grey suits with a burgundy tie. The vest is made out of the same material as the suit.

Your colors are similar to mine. My bridesmaids will be wearing gold sequin dresses so I didn't think a color would look good. We are doing black tuxes, white shirt, and black tie. We went back and forth a long time on color or not but I knew that black ties would look good and I wouldn't regret it like I might with color.

What Constance posted is classic and not too prommy at all.

We're going for pops of color on my guys' vests and ties (to show they're my attendants) and on the pocket squares for everyone.

You are correct. Matching the men's vest to the BM's dresses is a very high school prom look.

The men's accessories should be chosen to go with their tuxedo, not with the women' outfits.

No one ever suggests choosing the BM accessories to match the men's outfits.

There are readily accessible guidelines for men wearing a tuxedo.

@Constance that is my maid of honor's dress!! We are also doing burgundy. Our tuxes are navy with black ties, the groom has an ivory tie all with navy vests.

I do think that burgundy vest would look very prom but if you do black vest with a burgundy tie it will be nice. I'd stay with all black vests and just change the color of the ties.

@JennV Each of my girls has a different AA dress but same fabric and color. (Luckily, we got them before the whole bankruptcy fiasco) I found it extremely hard to find ties that coordinated. A lot of the ties were more blue than red. I suggested we do a alternate color, but FH really wanted burgundy.

Something else you can do to make it look less prom like is to have the guys wear a patterned (but still burgundy) tie.

@Constance we used Bill Levkoff but its SO similar to that gown. Each of my girls have different dresses as well! If you do a burgundy tie I'm sure it will not match exactly but close enough it won't look weird. When I went to Men's Wearhouse I didn't like their burgundy tie (it was too red for me) so we ended up black ties. I definitely think if you do a burgundy tie, match the vest to the suit, matching the vest and tie will make it look very prom. Did you ask FH about possibly blush? That may be a nice alternative too.

Vests should match the fabric and color of the jacket and pants to avoid looking like prom. You can change up the color of the tie though!

Thank you everybody. I need to look at just doing a burgundy tie. Did any of you change things for the groom or are all the men the same? I looked at ties at Men's Wearhouse and wasn't crazy about the burgundy. Are ties any different for formal wear or can I get them elsewhere?

@JennV--My bridesmaids have Bill Levkoff gowns too and are all different. Levkoff had the best selection of junior bridesmaid dresses in burgundy in my salon. I loved some of the Watters dresses but the closest color to burgundy was more a light red. @Constance--I love the look of the grey but he's set on black. I've also been seeing a lot of navy tuxes with burgundy which looks really good but is adding another color to my mix and I am triyng to stay focused on only so many.

My bridesmaids were in burgundy (it photographed more red) and the groom and groomsmen wore black tuxes!

If you want the classic black tux look then I think you should go with the traditional tux accents - so a black waistcoat or cummerbund. We decided to add blush pink pocket squares for the guys, and DH didn't dress any differently than the rest of his groomsmen.

You could look for a burgundy or patterned bow tie if you want to switch things up!

DH and GM wore exactly the same thing (charcoal gray tuxes and gray bow ties), but their boutonnieres were different. GM had purple tulips to match the BM dresses and DH had ivory roses

Hello! I work at a tuxedo shop and we get asked this all the time, when people want to match the vest and tie same color it does come off promy. If you are doing a grey suit/tux most likely the place you get it from will have a matching vest for the coat. You can have the groomsmen be in a burgundy tie and your FH in a white/ivory tie something to match your dress!!

Thank you @wwlynnie, the pictures definitely help. That was a big bridal party! I have more focus now. Hopefully, FH will take the advice too. We are older and the last thing I want is a prom date. :-)

Nothing looks better than a man in a classic black tuxedo with the proper white shirt and black bow tie. You can have the groomsmen wear burgundy bow ties and also have the option of bringing in color with their pocket squares.

I think the tuxes would only look "prom like" if the vest and tie were both maroon. Have the vest match the color of the tux. A maroon tie, charcoal grey tux and white shirt would look nice.

Thank you again everyone. We are going to look tonight. As of now, he wants to have the GM in black vest and tie. He wants to wear a black vest and burgundy tie. I am at the point in decision-making where it isn't something for me to argue about, even if I prefer something else. I would like my dad to wear a bow tie instead of the regular tie like FH and GM will be wearing.
