Dipping or plating a ring? Anyone ever done/heard of this?

Jessa, on February 25, 2010 at 9:27 PM Posted in Planning 0 12

For FH's ring we are actually going to use my father's wedding band from his marriage to my mom. he passed away when i was 13 and i have been wearing it on my thumb for years. we both think it would be really special if he wore it. only thing is...it is yellow gold, and i really wanted him to match me (my ring is platinum). my mom mentioned having the ring dipped or plated by a jeweler. i have never heard of this and was just wondering if anyone had experience in this area. thanks!

Rodium or arodium (sp?) plating/dipping" is what makes white gold white(all gold is yellow). If you have white gold rings they will start turning gold again (within 6mo-1yr depending on chem exposure, etc).

You could have this done to make it white.... Not sure what they would do to do it in platinum. (def more expensive)

I was just told this as well, Jamie!

My FH used his grandmothers ring to propose and it was beautiful, except for the fact that it was yellow gold and I wear silver. So I didn't do anything to the setting, but had it dipped in white gold and it's beautiful!!

I am getting my great grandmas wedding band. It too is gold and I want it to match my ring. We are getting it sized and dipped at Kings. To my surprise it is very affordable!

My white gold ring has to be plated every so often. Does your fiance want the ring to be white gold? Mine actually prefers yellow gold so we don't have matching rings. I figured it would be nice if they matched, but he is the one that has to wear it for the next 50 years, so I want him to like it!!

Thank you guys so much Smiley smile

country bride, if you dont mind me asking, what was the price?? i have NO idea what to expect price-wise.

gidge, that is a good point. he said he does not mind if it is yellow gold or white gold/platinum. i would prefer us to match, though, especially since he told me he doesnt mind either way. if he had a preference, i would def go with what he wanted Smiley smile

White gold is actually yellow gold with WHITE Alloys and a Rhodium plating to make it white...if you plate the yellow gold band, it will wear off and the yellow will show through...it won't wear evenly so it can look flakey or splotchy. Yellow gold has yellow alloys.

I am a jeweler so if you would like more info on this let me know! :-)

When my mom had my grandma's ring dipped, it was only like $30, not bad!

My BFF got her engagement ring dipped and it came out absolutely beautiful. It was originally yellow gold and she had it changed to white gold because her fiancee wanted a white gold ring.

I am curious, I have a white gold ring already and I would actually prefer that it be yellow or rose gold, can I still get it plated the same or is that only really done for white?
