Dinner reception instead

Sara M, on February 23, 2021 at 2:02 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 11
Hey so I will like to just have a dinner reception instead of Dj / party environment. guest count under 40. My fiancé doesn’t not dance and I don’t really care for it. I’m having a destination wedding 2022 in the Bahamas! Will it be informal for a dinner reception? I’ll make sure I’ll get great food drinks and sweets for our family! How did u guys feel attending a wedding with just dinner reception? From a guest perspective do you like for it to be known it’s a dinner reception instead? I feel like I’m getting Dj because it’s the traditional and it will be mainly be for my guest. There are some people that may dance and some that won’t! This is a huge factor due to prices !!

I've attended a few and they were fun. Everyone loved being able to mingle. Even when there was a dj, the majority just sat and chatted instead. Everyone had a blast whether they danced or not. Anyone who is upset is attending for the wrong reasons.

I had a dinner reception for my 20 person wedding, and it was great. I didn't hire a DJ but instead made a playlist on Spotify and played it through speakers. My husband and I did do a first dance, but most of my guests don't dance, so I didn't include much dancing music on the playlist with the exception of "Old Town Road" (my 5 year old nephew's favorite song) and a couple of line dancing songs that me, my sisters and one of my uncles danced to (my husband isn't a dancer). Even with minimal dancing, we had a great time! On my invitations, I simply said "Dinner to follow" instead of "Dinner and dancing to follow."

No - it wasn't awkward at all. People enjoyed mingling during the reception. My reception was 2 hours . . . and we had some traditional wedding elements (grand entrance and first dance, cake cutting, shoe game). Everything was over by 8 p.m., and since it was a destination wedding, my guests enjoyed some free time relaxing whether in their room, at the pool or on the beach. My guests are still talking about how much they enjoyed it (I got married over 5 weeks ago).

Even though we downsized to 35 people and canceled our DJ due to the pandemic, everyone still had a nice time at the dinner reception! If COVID hadn't been a thing and we had the same event, I think people would've really enjoyed just mingling. Your plans sound lovely to me!

I would just make sure to communicate to your guests that it is a dinner-only reception so that they're not expecting to dance. We informed our guests of that via our invites and wedding website.

Good luck with all of your planning!

DJ not needed! My favorite weddings as a guest (which influenced mine) were destination weddings with fewer than 50 guests—none had a DJ or dancing. The fabulous location, food, booze and socializing was all enough. ♥️

If you want to have a welcome event the night before the wedding, it can really help guests meet & mingle before your wedding!

Honestly, as long as there's food, I'm good. Normally I don't pay attention to music since I don't dance much so I just talk to others.

As long as you provide food and drinks, you're golden.
