Different Tastes in Music?

Kelly, on August 14, 2023 at 1:35 PM Posted in Planning 0 6

How are you dealing with having different tastes in music than your partner? I like mostly rock and jazz while my partner likes mostly k-pop and rap. We're having live music, so it's very difficult, if not impossible, to find a group that can do all four genres well. Our solution was a compromise: he gets total control over the cake and I get control over the music.

My husband and I have very different tastes in music, though there is some overlap. I gave him almost complete control over the reception music, though ended up having to give him a limit on the number of "must play" songs. He initially had over 200 songs on his "must play" list, which I asked him to limit to 10-15 songs. We put the rest on a separate list of "suggested songs" that our DJ could choose whether to play them or not. For ceremony music and first dance song, we decided on those songs together.

It’s funny because my fiancé and I listen to the same radio stations all the time when we’re together, but when it came to making a list for the reception, that’s where our individual tastes reared their ugly heads. I was a little bored at the last two receptions I’ve been to, and I realized after the fact it was because I didn’t know many of the songs played so I never really kicked into party mode. So my focus has been more on what songs are generally well known popular across generations, and if I have a song I love that most people won’t know, I’m just adding it to my getting ready suite playlist. He has all kinds of obscure R&B stuff on his list that I’ve never even heard of, so I guess that’s when our guests can take a break and go refresh their drinks if they’re not feeling it lol.

I love how everyone has found a way to compromise! Music is a huge passion for both of us, so we had one of my favorite songs played for our processional, and one of his favorite songs for the recessional. But since my song is heavy-metal, and his is 90s grunge, we had a string quartet,l learn the songs performed them. We walked down the aisle to Rammstein, and our recessional was Nirvana. Having the string quartet play them was actually quite beautiful. Our friends all knew the songs, but our parents and siblings who didn’t actually commented on what awesome music we picked, and wanted to know what it was! 😂
The string Quartet played for a half an hour prior to the ceremony, while guests are arriving. My FH and I each picked out 4 songs that we loved. Remember to play during that time. And actually, I never thought about it, but to this day I have no idea if they played all the songs or some of them, or even any of them! Lol
During cocktail hour, the venue played a really cool New Orleans jazz list over the rooms sound system. We thought it would be the perfect way to immerse our guests in the local culture/vibe (since we got married in NOLA), and get everybody in the mood to drink!

Oh my. I was using voice text and apparently it picked up random words in the background. I apologize for that brutal read 🤦🏼‍♀️😆

That's a good point about playing popular songs. I think we'll keep the more obscure songs (eg. Queen's Cool Cat) to the specific events like cake cutting.
