Different Photographer for Engagement Shoot?

Katherine, on January 1, 2022 at 6:31 PM Posted in Planning 0 7

Hi Everyone!

Long time reader, first time poster Smiley smile

Question- How important is it to have both your wedding and engagement photoshoot shot by the same photographer?

Backstory- Our wedding is out of state. We are considering hiring a photographer whose galleries we really love, but the issue is she would not be able to shoot our engagement photos due to distance ( distance for the wedding is not an issue). We do not want to travel to her for the engagement shoot as we have particular locations in mind. I hear it is important to have the same photographer for both engagement and wedding to build a relationship and also to test their work, but if I am confident in their quality of work, how important is it really? Has anyone else used different photographers for each shoot?

Thanks in advance!

I think the real benefit to this is ensuring that you and your spouse are comfortable with and like the photographer (The photographer is who you will interact with most on the wedding day!) But, that being said, if you've had conversations, read reviews and really feel good about them then don't stress. We had the photographer for our big wedding do our engagement shoot and he was awesome and it made us really excited to have him at the wedding, but we are using someone different for our elopement who we will have never worked with before.

We’re going to have different photographers! The biggest reason is because the one who did our engagement shoot is unavailable for our wedding. At the time we were still looking at venues and narrowing down a date; so it wouldn’t be worth putting down a deposit for them yet. If you both like the work you see with the photographer, and you have a good feeling about it, I say go for it 😊

Something that might put you at ease as well is to have a shot list ready. Are there specific pictures you want them to take on the wedding day? Listing them our might give some more peace of mind leading into it.

Thank you for the reply, and glad I am not alone in considering using two different photographers!

Honestly, I am not far enough along in planning to know a shot list yet, but I have heard that that is a must have.

Absolutely! When you feel ready to sit down and make one, Pinterest has plenty of lists and ideas you can pull from to make your own 😊 There’s to pressure to have shots of everything! Decide what’s most important for you that you’d want captured.

We are doing different photographers. We had a friend who has a starter photography business do our engagement photos because she does great couples portraits and has great prices. But I wanted someone who has worked weddings before to do our weddings.

I think it’s nice to get to work with the person before the wedding, but not necessary.

I had two different people take my engagement and wedding pictures. I loved both of their styles which I like were a lil different for each event. I also didn’t want to spend a ton of money on engagement photos. Both my photographers did amazing and love how different they are. I just made sure to make sure I loved both of their photos before choosing them
