Difference between Marriage License and Certificate???

HIS_WIFEY_09, on November 25, 2009 at 2:38 PM Posted in Planning 0 4

So im trying to change my last name to my husbands name. I went to the social security office and they tell me that i need to have a marriage certificate. When i called the guy that married us he said that i just have to get a certifide copy since i only have the customer copy and that i have to wait at least 6weeks before i go to court and get it since it takes time to get into the system. Need advice on what info is correct...Thanx

Marriage licsence is that thing you signed after you had your ceremony (or before, when ever you signed it) and the marriage certificate is the paper stating you got married on this day and what not, it's what you get after your marrriage liscense is submitted..its the thing you are supposed to carry with you in your wallet and what not. Here in canada you get two, one for in the Safety Deposit box, and another to take with you.

It does take some time to get the certificate back. It is different in every state. You will need it to change your name with SS, DMV, all that. Call the county clerk and ask them how to get a certified copy.

We both live in la county and they are the same thing you know the paper you signed at the county clearks office. you have a copy and the person who married you sent a copy to the county clearks office. You need to send in that pink paper they gave you also with $13 6 weeks after your wedding date or you can go to the county clerks 6 weeks after you wedding date and get a certified copy. It looks like a certified birth certificate. I still havent gotten mine yet eithier. As of right right your name is still your maiden name untill you change it with ss and dmv.

The marriage license is what you sign with your officiant either before or after the ceremony. The marriage certificate you can get from the county clerk. Each area is different in how long it takes to process. We had a civil ceremony in San Diego and a week later we picked up our marriage certificate and have begun changing our names over.
