Did you/will you have videographers?

Paige, on October 2, 2019 at 8:52 AM Posted in Planning 0 20
So, of course doing the one of the most frustrating part of wedding planning and looking for photographers. My wedding is in Philadelphia, and I'm in Charlotte so it's fun planning 500 miles away. 🙃 I'm stuck with deciding if I want videography. Since itll be 2020 and the century of smartphones and technology I was thinking why do I need it, but I understand the pros of why its better. My biggest issue is how it makes the packages sky rocket. I'm the type of girl who is DIY and will find an expensive item and recreate it for cheap but in the same breath spend $150 on shoes without blinking. So my frugal and bougie side are arguing.

So is it worth to have videographers or if you did have them did you regret spending the extra money or if you didnt have them do you wish you would've?

We won't be having a videographer. I think the videos are really cute and all, but it's a lot of money for something we're only gonna watch a few times during the newlywed phase and then have collecting dust on a DVD shelf (if people even burn DVD's anymore, it's probably all digital now lol). But for some people it's a major necessity, I'm just very frugal and I didn't feel the need Smiley smile

That's what I was thinking. Just found my DVD from my high school graduation ten years ago. You know it's my first time watching it? Very good points!

I have one. I think I cared more for that than photos but at the same time it rly isn't necessary. I'm sure your friends would also record the big moments. Many of my friends recorded first dance and my brides walk and what not

We hired just a photographer but now I really want a videographer too. We are also having a destination wedding so i share your stresses there. The day is going to fly by and I'd like to have that to look back on and relive with our family and children in the future.

We will be having a videographer. For the first 8 months of planning, we had agreed not too.. but I brought the topic up a few times. My career is in video/photography, so I began to think long term and really felt like I would regret not having a highlight video.. pictures capture memories, but the video adds the element of sound that I would love to have as well! I researched and found Lily & Lime through WW who fit better into our budget.

Daughter always wanted one, but it didn't initially fit the budget so she resigned herself to not having it. About a month before the wedding, she received an unexpected Christmas bonus at work and with SIL's blessing decided that's what she wanted to spend it on. With four weeks till the wedding, she didn't have a ton of options, so for the first time in the entire planning process she looked on Thumbtack and sent messages to videographers whose work she liked. She ended up finding a couple (who were GREAT) who happened to not be booked for her date (it was mid-January, so off-season). They charged $100 per hour to record and that included all the unedited video. Separate from that they had several levels of fully edited highlight videos that could be purchased separately. (The editing is super time-consuming, so that's typically a big part of the cost of videography.) She ended up booking them for 7 hours and purchasing a 6-7 minute highlight film for $800. So, for $1500 she got pretty much everything she wanted. (When she started looking at the beginning of the process, most videographers were in the $**** range and there was no way she was going to spend that.) Now, nine months after the wedding, she is VERY glad she had a videographer. Does she watch it every day? Of course not, but she's watched both the highlight and the six hours of raw footage several times. The raw footage is actually pretty cool, because in addition to the full ceremony and all the speeches, etc., there is tons of candid conversation/interaction between the B&G and members of the wedding party, fun footage of the reception and dancing, etc. The number one thing brides say in their BAMs is that "the day went so fast," "it's all kind of a blur," etc. With the raw footage, daughter gets to see stuff she missed at the time or was so in the moment she couldn't really remember much after. She has no regrets about that $1500 (which was about 5% of the total budget). Good luck!

I am also planning from a distance (Florida) with a wedding in Philly. It definitely has its challenges! I decided that we are not going to get a videographer, its just not in the budget and I will be okay with just getting little videos that the guests took. Pictures were a lot more important to me. I have found that some of the DJ's I talk to also offer Videographer for a little bit more reasonable price so maybe that might be an option for you.

We will be having one. it's just something i always knew i wanted. if it's something you want to do but money is the issues, which i get bc it's expensive, i'd ask a friend to do it. or a friend of a friend. tell them they can eat and dance but as long as they get everything on video. you can edit it yourselves.

i was in my friends wedding a couple years ago and they didn't do video. My FH actually took it upon himself to video the wedding on his phone. he did all the edits and got it down to about 30 min. they loved it. it doesn't have to be professional quality. but some moments are better captured in video.

For us, it was 100% worth it. We had a super personal ceremony & wanted it on film. I'm very photo/video-oriented so we 100% hired both.

My cousin shoots wedding videos so I'm lucky lol, he's only charging me $400 instead of $1,000+. If he wasn't available, I'd spend it on videography anyway!!

We hired a videographer for our wedding in May 2020 and I think what made us so happy we did is my fiancé’s friends wife just lost her mom and they were in the fence about video so my future FIL did video for them and now that’s the last video she has of her mother. Not saying something bad will happen but I think it’s worth spending the money on if it’s soemthjng you’ll love back on during anniversaries and it’ll be nice to re live the day again and have those memories. You can get a videographer but has them there for a few hours to save money

We didn't hire a videographer, we just got 3 GoPros to use for the whole time. For the ceremony we set two up at the church to record. For the reception we asked my cousin to record the entrances and our first dance and after that the three of them just got passed around between the bridal party members and guests. Originally we wanted to assign important things to bridal party members to record (cake cutting, parent dances, etc.) but we never got around to it. But they stepped up and got all the important moments anyway. And there's a lot of fun stuff from around the reception that got recorded that we didn't get to see because we were busy doing other stuff at the time. I would definitely recommend this system if your bridal party/friends/family are up to it. I guess it's partially a "know your crowd" situation. We're fortunate to have a lot of friend and family who like recording stuff/taking a lot of pictures so they were on top of it.

I understand why it sky rockets. It's a lot of expensive equipment and adding such means more employees. Plus considering their skill set in editing the photos AND videos and customizing it specifically to the couple.

We were looking into photography and we saw that they were offering a package for $1,300 but we saw the next package they offered clearly stated that we would get the rights to our photos as well which is always a plus.

It also comes with unlimited location coverage and unlimited photo/video capture for $2,000. It just really depends on which company you go with and what's included in your packages.

This was something I went back and forth on and we ended up getting one and I'm so glad I did. I never thought I'd be the type of girl who would want to watch her wedding video multiple times, but after the first time I watched it, I wanted to watch it again. We wrote our own vows, so watching that again was my favorite part. It was such a rush when it happened, I didn't remember everything my H said to me. We also had little touches like a dance by my niece and my sisters and nephews did this performance, which I love having captured on film. I would say if we didn't have those family performances or wrote our own vows, I probably wouldn't care as much. It does bring the day more to life than photos.

So as a wedding videographer, we will definitely be having videographers for our day! Video captures so much more than a photo, and while of course having photos of the day is important, video is able to take you back to your day to relive it. The sounds of the day, hearing your vows again, hearing your speeches -- you can't get that in a picture. I personally think it's worth it! And if you can fit it in your budget, definitely do it!

I have a combo video and photo package with the same company and I will not want to miss our personal vows/speeches, etc. Our wedding will be 100% phone and camera free except for the pros until we say I do so there will be no social media snitching either.

My fiancé and I had a talk about this and it really boils down to your priorities...

    1. It is a very expensive service

    2. How often will you really watch it? Will it make the price tag worth it?

If you're super into social media and sharing your life that's the only way I can see it being beneficial.

Personally my fiancé and I recognized that we would use the pictures (hung around the house) way more than we would use/watch the video. So we opted for a little bit more expensive photographer in place of having both a photographer and videographer.

lol unfortunately I too have a frugal and bougie side so that's been making wedding planning fun 😂 I wish you luck with your final decision!

We *did* have a videographer, but we also got one for cheap. A coworker of mine is an up-and-coming filmmaker who wanted to try her hand at wedding videography. She offered a great deal, so we took it, and we're super glad.

She got us a 5 minute highlights video within 4 days, and now she's transferring all the raw footage to a harddrive we gave her.

Perhaps there might be some film students who want to earn a little extra?
