Did you insure your engagement ring?

John Smith, on December 17, 2019 at 11:44 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 1 14

We just got the appraisal back on my wedding ring and are looking into how to insure it.

Did you get insurance on your engagement ring? If so, how did you go about doing that?

I added it to my homeowners insurance as a personal liability. Statefarm was going to charge me for a lot less monthly than JM, and cover everything JM was going to cover.

My fiance had mine insured before picking it up. I believe it's on our State Farm insurance with our vehicles and home. I would call you insurance agent.

We insured through Jeweler's Mutual, like many people above. It should be very quick and easy since your ring is already appraised.

JewelersMutual is great but it depends on what you want to do. My renters insurance will not cover the value and I feel like jewelry insurance is very specific vs going off the value of the ring. If lost or stolen, the jewelry insurance will ensure you have the same quality, color, and cut stone on the replacement. I’m not sure if renters or homeowners gets that specific to the diamond quality. And check which policy type covers travel. If I’m on vacation, my jewelry is as insured as it is at home which could be different for renters and home owners policies. They may only cover if stollen from your home.

One watch out is to make sure you fully read your appraisal documents. I went a whole year with only my engagement band insured, not the center stone because of how it was worded. The appraisal document described my ring but referenced a separate diamond card that had the appraisal of the stone only. The bottom of the report said appraisal value is x so that’s what I insured. But it was really x (setting) plus the stone so I needed to add them up. Send in your appraisal documents to the insurance agency so they can help make sure you covered everything. They never asked for the appraisal documents for my file when I first opened the policy, so it wasn’t until I added my wedding band that I submitted the reports for both the band and engagement ring. Submitting the reports is how I found something was off. But I’m all squared away now. 😆

I haven't insured mine, but might along with my wedding band and my FH's wedding band after we are married. I looked into insuring it through a jewelry specific company (cannot remember which) and the premium was about $1 for every $100 with a minimum premium of $30/year (so basically $3000 worth of coverage). While I don't know what my FH spent, I'm pretty sure my ring is under that amount so I was going to wait until we had more jewelry to insure it with to maximize the value of our premium. Neither of us own any other expensive jewelry (I think I might have a necklace or two worth a few hundred dollars but that's it). With my e-ring plus our two wedding bands, the premium would be well worth it (especially because my FH is the most likely to lose his ring).

I was advised against insuring it through homeowners insurance because any claim for lost/damaged jewelry could potentially impact your insurance rates, and a jewelry store told me the jewelry specific companies were much better if you needed to make a jewelry specific claim.

My FH insured it before he even picked it up, haha! I'm not sure where he insured it, but I think he just tacked it onto our renter's insurance (don't quote me on that, I have no idea). I HIGHLY recommend getting it insured immediately!
