Did I Order the Wrong Size? Bigger Chest vs. Smaller Waist/Hips.

PrettyinPink, on July 19, 2017 at 2:09 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 17

Hey ladies, I am kind of freaking out! I ordered a size 12 Eddy K wedding dress (mermaid fit/strapless) from a local bridal store in my area. Thankfully, the store carried the dress in a size 12, so I had a good understanding of what I ordered. The issue is my measurements were all over the place. I measure between a size 12/14 for my chest, a size 10 for waist and almost a size 6 for hips. I was recommended to go with a size 12 (biggest part of my body), however, I am worried about alterations and the cost of them. I know many women don't have completely proportionate bodies, but this is worrying me. I am also planning on toning some more and trying to lose another 10 pounds (not exceeding). I want to make sure that I am supported up top since I was in between a 12/14 chest and ordered the 12, but I don't want to get a size 14 and have it really baggy in my waist and hips. I am also concerned about alterations and the cost since it seems a lot has to be done? Any advice? Thanks!

I measured 6/2/4 and ordered a size 4. I had to get it altered of course, but it worked out just fine. Alteration costs vary but I think I paid about $400 to get it taken in, cups added, hemmed, and a bustle.

You definitely should order on the larger size than smaller. Your girls would be popping out all over the place because you can only take a dress out so much. Its much easier to alter it smaller.

ETA If the 12 fit well on the girls then I'd say go 12. A good trick is also taking a measuring tape and putting around the largest part of your body and tightening it to the size 10 (instance, if the 10 measurement for bust is 36, have them tighten it to 36inches and see how it feels)

My body is the same way. You want the dress ordered for the biggest part of your body. So you did right. Surprisingly the hips and butt area fit perfectly. You may be surprised. I only paid $250 for alterations however. I think others could expand a little better.

I measured inbetween two sizes (one was one exact size, one measurement was legit in between the two and the third was exact for the next size up). I ended up based on their Rec for the dress ordering the smaller size. It fit like a glove, but I got lucky. I also stressed myself the F out going to pick it up and trying it on when it came in. Same thing a week before the wedding after alterations were done (I gained 1.5lbs and in my mind the dress wasn't going to fit, I also hadn't tried the dress on in a month due to getting married back home vs where we live now) Save yourself the mental stress and go with your largest size. I'm sure you'll have an amazing alterationist!

I sew and make dresses for people. You always have to go with the largest measurement. The alterations will then allow the rest of the dress to be graded down to your size. It seems scary, but if you don't, then it won't fit at all in the largest area and you are up shit creek.

I do understand the feeling. My bust is large and it had to be a size 22. My waist is much smaller - size 14-16. Luckily, I bought from a company that for $150 will custom make it to my size, so paying to have it made to order was beneficial to me.

You did the right thing. It may not seem it, but you did.

My chest and waist are a size 6 and my hips are a size 12. I ordered a size 12 and am so happy I did. I don't know how much alterations will be yet but I think they won't be too bad.

They said I was closer to the 12 than the 14 for my chest by a good amount. I only slightly went over the 12 by a little and the 14 would have been too big I'm assuming.

I agree with ordering the size to fit your biggest part. I always have to order based on my bust. It's hard to let out but easier to let in.

Always order bigger. It's much easier to take a dress in than to try and figure out how to make it larger!

This is what the lady from the shop said:

    Your measurements are as follows:

    Bust: 38.5

    Waist: 29.5

    Hips: 37.5

The sample size, which you tried on in store is a size 12 and has the following measurements:

    Bust: 37

    Waist: 30

    Hips: 41

    She also said:

In my professional opinion, the sample size 12 fit you well through the bust and the waist, with exception to the hip, which will need to be taken in for the fit and flare look you desire. The seamstress has many experiences with this style of dress and required hip alteration and do not foresee it to be an issue.

At the end of the day, it is your choice which size you select.

I measured between three different sizes as well. It's very common. It's easier to take in a dress than it is to let it out so it's smart you went with the larger size. Your seamstress will be able to fit it to you everywhere and size those are common alterations they shouldn't cost an arm and a leg.

Sounds like it was a good idea to order the 12. It's good to have a little bit of room in the waist anyway, IMO, because food. I'm actually pretty nervous, because my dress is being made to my measurements (32-23-35) and they were taken before I had eaten lunch. Hopefully I'll have some room!

Yes, but as you can see I am over the bust size by 1.5. She said I did measure with my bra on so that could be why it is like that - it did fit fine the size 12 up top. I just don't like how I am 1.5 over my bust size (sorry if that is incorrect I am exhausted and at work in a hurry)...

I also ordered an eddy k dress at my largest size, my hips. It is 4 sizes bigger than my bust and other dresses I tried on. I'm terrified but I know it can be taken in at least. Fingers crossed for you!

My salesman wanted me to size up to have room for my chest, instead I decided to get the size that fit the rest of my body. The dress arrived and it's too big everywhere. I should have sized down even more!

My shop told me they were ordering the dress to fit my bust instead of my waist because it's easier to let out the waist than take in the bust
